I'm sorry, I know there are so many of these threads and it gets really annoying but would just be interested to know people's thoughts. I realise that you can't really say with a stand alone piece but was just hoping for a guide. DC wrote this this morning, exactly as is type it here:

The Gruflalo who was afraid of Knits (knights)

Once upon a time lived a gruflalo. Now you would think he is a scarry and horbile gruflalo but he wasent a scarry or horbile gruflalo. In fact he was a really nice gruflalo. This gruflalo was not afraid of enythink as you would amagin ecept for a knit. He was terrfide of Knits! One day he was out walking when he saw a rael Knit. He started to shiver. ?Oh no? cried the gruflalo. The gruflalo sudlny thort I shouldind be afraid of knits and then he went up to the knit and said ?you don?t scarre me Knit. I am going to overcome my fear? he mutterd to himself. And do you no what he did? But then they started to fight. Who would win? And the gruflalo won! And overcame his fear. And for the knit he just went home and cried.

The End

I'd need to see the writing-but it looks a secure level 2.

I'd say 2a or 3c. Depending on other evidence. Makes good use of story language, good range of punctuation appropriately used, humour, ambitious word choices. Veer towards 2a based on simple sentence structure and lack of more mature connectives and adverbial phrases. Also, spelling is sometimes phonetically not quite plausible, which is not necessarily a weakness but indicates child using mainly phonics but also visual recall for more complex words which sometimes leads to slight confusion with sound sequences. This is probably not a bad thing, as it means the child is starting to secure conventional spelling having already attained good phonic awareness. However, child's sophisticated sense of humour and timing may well mean they are level 3 if you assessed a wider range of work. S/He may use connectives and adverbial phrases in recounts and informational texts, which seems likely given his mature use of language in this story format. Anyway, they are doing fantastically well.

15 years teaching experience. 7 of those in year 2. 1 would say secure 2b. Possibly a 2a but would need to see more evidence to give that.

I agree 2B (secure level 2) on that particular piece of writing
