Attainment levels in Y1 and 2

A friend recently started telling me about the 'level' her Y1 child is on, how this compared with the expected levels for different years and what her predicted level is for end of Y1. My DD is in Y1 and the school hasn't mentioned anything about expected/actual/predicted levels. Please can someone explain what these levels are

Someone should have answered you by now. I'll have a go.

The levels are NC, national curriculum levels. And I believe that a child should be at 1b when they are assessed in Y1. I also think many schools are aiming for 1a instead of 1b.

Hopefully someone else can shed more light.

Our school doesn't talk levels in Y1 either, or at least not so far. We get told if they are performing below, at, or above national expectations and that is it. There is not much discussion at the school gate or between parents either, or at least that I have come across. So don't worry too much about exact levels and comparing your child to others, especially at this age!

Yes they are now aiming for a 1a (at least at our school) by end of year 1. I've found teachers will tell you their levels if you ask but info isn't usually offered on levels unless there is a particular issue!

Our school doesn't give out levels, until the end of Year 2, when they are required to inform parents.

In key stage 2, they will give out levels if you ask very nicely. Smile

A lot of other local school seem to hand them out each term, and I believe it gets a bit like reading levels - lots of stealth bragging at the school gates.

If you google "national curriculum key stage 1 levels" you can find the government website which explains the numbering.

Thanks. I'll take a look and ask more at the next parents' evening. So far all we ever get told is she's doing well which is all very nice to hear, but I'd like to know a bit more than that and in particular things which they're looking for that we can help with so hopefully asking a more direct question about levels will get a more detailed response.

Definitely not wanting to get into competitive parent syndrome; so far DD's class seems to have avoided this on the book levels Smile

Our school will give out levels if you ask them and want a 1A at the end of yr1 in reading but the rest is 1B (this is to take into account the phonics test at the end of yr1).
