Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones.

ChippyMinton · 02/02/2013 16:40

Mr Majeika series? here

Virgil · 02/02/2013 16:40

Try the Kane chronicles. Egyptian magicians rather than wizards but v similar. DS1 loves them.

Susan Cooper The Dark is Rising

Charlie Bone books are good - not exactly wizards, but people who have magical powers.

Feenie · 02/02/2013 17:29

Ben Muzzy (apprentice wizard) books are great, used to read them to Y3 and Y4 - this is the first one.

Takver · 02/02/2013 17:56

YY to the Chrestomanci books & Charlie Bone

Also My Friend Mr Leakey, perfect for that age (actually, I'd still love to have a friend with a small dragon that would grill fish/make toast Grin )

pluCaChange · 02/02/2013 18:13

The Worst Witch series? I'm saving that for DS, so he has a full range of hero-types in his reading life!

MGgirl · 02/02/2013 19:54

Muddle Earth by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell

CaptainSweatPants · 05/02/2013 21:52

Thanks everyone
That's great!

Magic thief by Sarah Prineas (trilogy ) is excellent. So is Dragonborn but a step up from beast quest. Then Annie Sage's Magyk series. And of course HP

mimbleandlittlemy · 07/02/2013 13:54

Ursula le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea books?

deleted203 · 07/02/2013 13:57

YY to Chrestomanci, and also to 'The Dark is Rising'.

Try Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Not really wizards, but folks with magical powers still.

How about The Hobbit?

Wizardology's a hit with my 8 year old.
