Reading levels

Yes I know, done to death, but thought I would share a lesson learnt. Beginning of school yr DD in YR 1 was on ORT level 4. They were too easy and after much grief from very unhelpful teacher was advised by the lovely ladies here to leave it so I did. Last Monday DD read to the headteacher who promptly put her on Level 6. She is now more challenged and enjoying reading again. Moral of the story is although not all teachers know better someone eventually will spot your child and its best not to stress and get all "tiger mum " about it !

Yes, but who wants to spend a year reading level 2 books with a child capable of reading level 6 ones?

If your dc has an understanding and approachable teacher by all means ask. DDs teacher basically put me in my place! Asked three times, got DH to ask and no joy. Decided life was too short in the end but the relief when someone did notice was great ! We read harder books at home which meant when she was put up a level she coped well .

I so desperately wanted to think like that and be the relaxed mum trusting the teachers but sometimes it's not that simple. If u have a kid crying with boredom over yet another unchallenging uninspiring book that gets read in minutes at the bus stop, you do have to try and step in.

Agree, all you can do is ask the teacher and if they won't budge then do your own thing at home.

Not all kids will be lucky enough to read with the HT though. DS is in yr3 and has never read with HT or the deputy.
