Pocket money and bed times - 8 year old

Hi there. I'm posting here rather than anywhere else as my query is in relation to primary school aged children.

I'm just wondering what time your little ones go to bed during the school week.

Also - what is the going rate these days for pocket money - also generally speaking are your children expected to do chores to earn this pocket money?

Ta.

We don't do pocket money. DD(8) is expected to keep her room tidy and strip her bed when required, put her dirty clothes in the appropriate wash basket, clear her place at the table and put items in dishwasher, take her swimming kit out and put drape over bath. She is asked to help out on an ad hoc basis with emptying dishwasher and she moved a load from washing machine into tumble drier at the weekend for me when I was painting.

School nights she is up in bed around 8pm.

dd1 goes to bed at 7.30 but reads until 9pm (but i think 8pm is an ideal time).

Pocket money, dd1 gets money for doing chores rather than weekly pocket money so some weeks she may get £2-£3, other weeks she doesnt get anything.

DS (9) gets £2 a week pocket money paid into his bank account, for which he has a hole in the wall card. He generally saves it up to buy big items ( eg he just bought some new football boots that he doesn't need but wants as they are the latest "thing" ).

He is expected to keep his room tidy, make his bed and generally tidy up after itself. He is average at all of the above, although he had a blitz on his room recently and has kept it looking pretty good.

He goes to bed at 8.15, except on football training nights when he is home later. He generally doesn't get to sleep until 9.30.

DS(8) has lights out at 8pm but he's in bed reading from 7.30pm. He doesn't get pocket money yet because we haven't sorted it out, but when we do he'll get 80p a week (10p per year).

He and DD take it in turns to lay the table and help clear the kitchen after dinner. They also have to strip their beds, help make it and sort out their clean washing and put it away. And tidy their bedrooms every week.

This isn't linked to pocket money though. It's what they do because they live in the house and it isn't a hotel or full of servants. Grin

dd (9) and ds (6) get £5 a week pocket money. DD has lights off at 8.30pm and ds has lights off at 8pm on school nights.

redskyatnight · 30/01/2013 16:40

In theory DS (8) is in bed at 8pm, but on 2 nights he has late activities which means it's closer to 9pm. He tends to read until 9 anyway (and still gets up at 6, but then he's always been a child that didn't sleep much).

He gets £1 on Saturday which he tends to spend some on sweets and save the rest. He's expected to do certain chores (just because that's part of living in our family) but haven't explicitly tied pocket money to it.

Hulababy · 30/01/2013 16:50

At 8y DD was getting £2.50 pocket money a week; it goes up by 50p on each birthday starting with £1 from age 5y.
Her bed time was 7:30-8pm, lights out at 8pm; flexible at weekends.

DieWilde13 · 30/01/2013 16:55

Lights off at 8.
£1 pocket money a week if all his chores were done. Chores are tidying the bedroom, putting dirty clothes into wash basket, cleaning the hamster cage and putting dishes in the dishwasher after meals.

Highlander · 30/01/2013 16:56

DS doesn't get pocket money. He occasionally does jobs for money (£1).

In bed at 7:45pm, read until 8pm then lights out.

shrimponastick · 30/01/2013 16:59

Bed was 7pm.

No pocket money, although I have paid £10 per month into his account which he used for big items such as DSi.

He is now 15 so bedtime isn't 7pm any longer ;)

anklebitersmum · 30/01/2013 17:02

No pocketmoney and DD1, DS2 and DD2 are in bed for around 7.30 Sunday through Thursday. 8.30 on a Friday or Saturday.

Keeping bedrooms tidy and transferring washing to baskets etc is expected as standard but we do issue sweet money for youth club and they get extra chosen treats at the weekends for good behaviour.

anklebitersmum · 30/01/2013 17:04

BTW it's 50p sweet money each and chores are a welfare issue. We're in charge, they're not and it's "well fair" Grin

QueenofClean · 30/01/2013 17:07

DD1 doesn't get pocket money as she already gets most things she needs. Up to bed at 7pm and lights off at 8pm.

sneeders · 31/01/2013 13:26

Bed 8pm.
Pocketmoney: £2 per week, however this is conditional on following house rules, and in particular any tasks to be learnt, or succesfully breaking any unwanted habits, so for example, at the moment she "forgets" to use her knife and fork. She now knows that she can loose 20p for forgetting, we stop nagging, just simply remind her very calmly that she has lost 20p and magically she remembers. She also can gain small rewards financially for doing jobs around the house, for example putting dishes in the dish washer and wiping the table, also hoovering which she loves. She is expected to fully tidy her room without reward, about once a week.

BirdyBedtime · 31/01/2013 13:30

Bedtime during the week is 8.15 for lights out but in bed 15 mins earlier. Weekend bedtime can be up to 9pm.

Pocket money is £1 per week but this is dependent on keeping her room tidy, helping set and clear the table and not being sent to her room (ie really naughty) more than 3 times in a week. I have to say it's a rare week she doesn't get it.

DS1 (10) goes to bed at 9pm. He gets £5 per week straight into his bank account which he saves up for go-karting practice. To "earn" his pocket money he has 4 set chores a day - tidy room, feed the dog, take the recycling out and dry the dinner dishes.

If he doesn't do all his chores he doesn't get the full money.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 31/01/2013 13:34

DD1 is 8 has less than 2 pounds pocket money which she saves (but it is early days) not conditional, she helps around the house, and goes to bed between 8h and 8h30.
