Hi,

I would like to know the reading levels for the following books. Our school uses colors start with pink, red, yellow, blue, green, etc... Also if you do not know the levels for all of these book. I would be interested the reading level of the child who can read and understand them.

The books are:

From Dr Seuss: Green egg and Ham; Dr Seuss ABC; The Cat in the hat; One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

From Julia Donaldson: Rosie's Hat, Hippo has a Hat, Night Monkey, Day Monkey.

Thanks.

There are quite a few graded book level listings out there on the Internet. Some of them contain Dr Seuss books.

The last time I saw Green Eggs and Ham on one of those listings it was somewhere in the middle of the difficulty range level 19 (I think). I found it strange because Dr Seuss is where my daughter started reading. Mind you she started as a whole word reader. Had she been decoding she might not have been reading those books yet.

I saw The cat in the Hat on the list you recommend lernandsay and the book is on level 16 (Green eggs and Ham also on level 16). But I do not know what does it mean comparing with the colors we use in our school?

I've seen teachers discussing how confusing they found comparing different books to their colour scheme. I think you need to use quite a bit of guesswork. I think these lists are quite old too. I don't know if there are any more uptodate lists out there. I did find a couple of books that my daughter has had sent from her school on the lists. So I know quite well how they compare with what my daughter is reading. Can your child read and understand Green Eggs and Ham?

Yes, he can. He did not learn to read whole words. They use phonics in the school (and I encourage him too to spell the words if he does not know how to read it).

The list that I recommended is not the only list on the Internet. Are any of your son's school reading books really old and tatty? If they are you might find them on one of the lists. I don't think the new books are on them.

Yes, the books that we get from the school are very old but it seems to me the books are not for one reading scheme only. Some of them are ProjectX, some are Biff and Chip and they have lots others as well.

I can find some of my son's book on the list. Thanks.
