DD did an important maths test this week. Would it have been part of SATs?
Also is there one level of paper or diff levels according to ability?

My sons were in May (not sure if thats the same everywhere Hmm) just before the big summer holidays, but I should think the children would have to practice!, practice!, practice! SATS are soooo important to schools dontchaknow? Wink Grin

DD Yr 2 has been doing PIPS? maths testing last week (all info from her so not 100% reliable)

Headteacher came in and they had to work through a booklet.

Year 2 can do the SAT tests at any point in the year there isn't a set date like KS2 so your child could well be doing their Maths SAT test. There is a level 2 paper and a level 3 paper.

If a child does a Maths KS1 SAT test now in January surely the results would be poorer compared with a cohort that took the test in May or June? Some will still be quite young in year and KS1 Maths skills must still be being developed?

Can a child not develop into a level 3, for example, between now and the end of Y2? When our school does SATS that's it, that will be the year end reported level I think.

Feenie · 25/01/2013 09:20

The test is part of an ongoing assessment conversation, NOT a final assessment. A test used in January would inform the next steps of teaching, and enable a teacher to show how children are progressing, and where they need to go next.

Teacher assessment in Year 2 (and all other years, actually) is ongoing, and the test forms a very small part of the evidence collected.

Ours have been doing test as SATS the headteacher said something about seeing how they cope and what levels they are

Yes, it's possible, and a test done now would inform future level 3 teaching.

Some schools prefer to use the tests to help confirm final judgement (although they are warned not to over rely on the test result), but they don't have to use them like that.

My son had a 48 question maths paper on Monday but the full SATs testing period here is in May. I assumed it was a mock style paper that just gives guidance now, but tbh communication between school and home is reliant on the children.

Feenie · 25/01/2013 10:35

The guidance states that Y2 children should only do one test - however, there are still primary schools who, 8 years after the change in Y2 assessment, still rely on tests. It's poor practice - they need to read this document, intended for Y2 teachers.

Does anyone know whether children below a level 2 do the Sats test?

Feenie · 25/01/2013 15:47

Yes, I do, and no, they don't. Hth Smile

Thanks feenie :-D

WE're doing ours now. Gets them over and done with - much better than doing them in the summer term. It's very useful for ongoing assessments, and a good indicator of what you've got to work on.
