DS2 is 4.9 and in reception. he is in school part time due to his physical SN (3 full days a week at the moment but was 2 mornings, then 3 mornings last term).

I have always encouraged him to do what other children his age do, and helped him when necessary eg holding him on ride on toys and sitting him in his chair in the football goal so he could "play football" with DS1 (with a foam football). Due to this and luck, although he can't walk very far or very fast, gets very tired and uses a wheelchair at times he has no learning difficulties.

I'm a bit concerned as he has only just brought home books he is meant to read himself and he is struggling to recognise the words in it although he read one word after encouragement and sounding out the letters. Is this about average for his age? Is there anything we can do to help him? We already read him at least one story a day, sometimes more.

The teacher said he is doing fine but DS1's reading is about average (aged 6.6, year 2, level 9 of oxford reading tree) but he is the only child in his class above level 6 so I'm thinking the average for that school is a bit low generally.

I think that's very normal for his age -especially as he has had less school time that his peers. I think it takes a while to "get going" at first. I'm sure if you keep encouraging him to sound at the words you will see him making progress in leaps and bounds before too long.

I read with Reception children at DD's school and at least half the children are still on the first level of books.

Thanks, glad to hear all this is normal. I will keep encouraging him.

How do you know what level the other children in your older son's class are reading at?

There is only 15 children in the year group and the parents gossip a lot! Also the teacher told us at parents evening that he was the only one reading level 9 and that he was the best in the class at reading. Apparantly she told all the parents that their child was best in the class at something so that evening several of the mums announced on facebook that their child was the best in the class at everything Grin

Ds struggled with reading and was on ORT 1 all the wat through reception. I ended up telling his reception teacher I wasn't going to make him read as hometime was becoming a misery for both of us. Luckily she was supportive as I was scared of turning him off as tantrums were dreadful.

He is now in year 2 and reading ORT stage 11 so I am a firm believer that the early stage means nothing and it happens when they are ready.
