Hi all,

Just want someone else to give me their opinion on a particular situation I find myself in. I have a 5 year old boy who started school last year. He was a late talker but now his speech is fine however his concentration is poor and attention span is short. Teacher says he is a very good little boy and has made huge progress since he started but he swings on his chair during class and finds it hard to sit still. His work is good in school once he applies himself and academically he is bright. He is recieving learning support and is getting on very well at this. She mentioned to us she would like him to be psychological assessed but we as his parents would perfer to leave this until later and give him a chance because right now I feel he would be labeled very easily because he does not do exactly what all other 5 year olds are supposed to be doing. Please help....

Why don't you want him to be assessed? If there are any issues he can get extra support more quickly and that can only be a good thing. Don't think of it as a bad thing or a label.

If it makes you feel any better my son was also one who could not keep still and concentrate. With time, he's got better and better. Although he still can't sit very still! He has inproved a lot (he's nearly 7 now). 5 is still very young isn't it?
Hope someone else can give you advice.

Is this definitely a psychological assessment? The reason i ask is because the term often given to the person who carries out all manner of observations / tests to determins a child's needs is often reffered to as the Ed Psych ( Educational psychologist ) As a teacher and parent I would acept the opportunity to assess your sons needs. This should not label him but give the school a better understanding of how they can help him.

I would allow the psychological assessment, they are very good & can get the correct support/advice in place. Imo the sooner the better, 5 is very young to be labelled but he may not neccessarily need labelling, just some tips/support.
My son is 5, & dx autistic in Nov, I am very grateful for the school & outside help support.

It probably is an EP assessment, psych would be clinical psych and that is done through paeds etc
