How does your school teach spelling...?

...these days? And does work?

Are they meant to learn words and do spelling tests?
Or do they learn spelling rules?

DD'school doesn't do spelling lists and tests which is how I thought spelling is taught these days, but they've started doing spelling rules at school (year 3) which seems to be quite effective, for her anyway.

Just wondering if there is a standard teaching method.

We teach spelling rules

We teach phonics

We teach phonics too.

We use investigation to find generalisations in spelling.

Ds's school send home a completely random list of different spellings which are grouped together for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

We teach spellings in KS1, but by KS2 we only do phonics as interventions.

We use a scheme which is shit

We changed to Sounds-Write in October and I'm amazed at the difference it has made to spelling in KS1.

Ds1 and DD learned to read with a system called phonographix. They are top group in literacy but in my opinion, average spellers.
Ds2 learned to read and write with Sounds Write. (Not mrz's school) He's an average reader for his age and writes as little as possible but his spelling is much more accurate than his older siblings at the same age who were on higher bands.
