Private tutor for 9 yo boy with dyspraxia?

Hi Smile

We are thinking that ds, 9 y o, needs a private tutor to help with his handwriting, speech problems caused by dyspraxia, and maths. Does anyone have any experience of this, or can anyone recommend how to find a tutor who knows how to help dyspraxic children? Do tutors normally come to your house? And am I right in thinking it's about £30 an hour - or is it more for SEN tutors? I'd be very grateful for any help.

We had an occupational therapist for out eldest who has dyspraxia. This helped with fine and gross motor skills which eventually helped a bit with his handwriting. What really helped him was to find something outside school that he was good at and this improved his confidence and self esteem no end. We got the OT via the psychologist who made the assesment of dyspraxia and paid but if you can get a referral through the GP then speech therapy and OT should be available through the NHS.

Thank you, Greenheart! Smile We hadn't thought of an OT. His handwriting and speech are the two biggest issues - we also wondered about whether singing lessons might help with speech...? He's in a choir and is learning an instrument so is musical enough. How is your eldest now?

At university and running a small choir as well as singing in others. His handwriting is still rubbish but now he can use a computer life is so much easier for him.

Sounds great, greenheart! Does he get (or need) any extra support from his university?

Holo - if you are in Greater Manchester area I know a great tutor who is brilliant with dyspraxic children. She has training and loads of experience as an OT but is now working as a tutor but specialising in dyspraxia.

PM me if you want more details

Thank you, but alas, no, we are nowhere near Manchester! Smile

My son doesn't get any support at uni as he doesn't really need it now.
