Can anyone recommend an excellent tutor in Bush Hill Park, Enfield or Winchmore Hill?

We are looking for recommendations for a primary school tutor for kids year 3/4 upwards.

We would need someone who can honestly and realistically assess someone's ability to see whether it is worth tutoring towards selective secondary AND someone who could assess whether there are gaps that need filling from the current school education.

We don't want to tutor for the sake of it and if we are told that the best thing for our child is to support school with normal help at home then that's fine too.

My child is year 3, has been doing really well at school but the school itself is not doing well so we have little to measure his actual ability against.

We have serious reservations about this year's teacher and don't want dc to lose the enthusiasm and ability encouraged by previous teachers.

We have no idea if dc is bright enough to apply for selective schools but school say he might be if we want to go down that route.

I HATE the idea of being a pushy tutoring mother if dc isn't at the right level. However, I would equally hate to deny a bright child the opportunity to do better if given better support.

Having googled local tutors there seem to be several agencies but we wouldn't have a clue where to start.

I am regular but n/c for this post.

Many thanks for any help.

Hi, can totally understand your feelings, it's diffficult to keep the balance, but you are doing the right thing, at least you have your child assessed and then will know where you stand. Sorry I can't help as I'm new to the area... just saw your post & felt a bit worried as i read about "the school not doing well". i know it's not exactly Enfield area, but i wonder whether you know good primary schools in Southgate area? We are moving in a week time feel lost.
Osidge, walker primary, Monkfrith? Your opinion? Grateful in advance.

Hi there
Thanks for replying. I hear great things about Walker but you do need to be very very close to be in catchment. I think most of the primaries you mention have good points although I don't know any of them personally. I would just go and visit as many as you can.
Good luck with the move!

Hi, be careful to not fall into the trap of feeling obliged to hire a tutor if your child is taking the 11+.
You can support your son at home. I've used the materials from www.elevenplusacademy.co.uk.

Year 4 is about the right time to start preparing for the possibility of entering your child for selective tests etc.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Have pm'd you smallbluestar.

is Edmonton too far?

There is an excellent tutor we have used for all 3 dcs but in Edmonton.

PM if you think it might be useful?

tutorhelp · 08/01/2013 12:44

Actually we are very close to Edmonton so a PM would be great. Thank you!
