Primary application - proof of parental responsibility

Just competed the online application for DD and was expecting to have to provide council tax document for proof of address. But didn't realise we also needed proof of parental responsibility. We don't get tax credits so no letters there, and I'm pretty sure that I only had one letter about child benefit right at the beginning and I can't find it.

I will obviously try and get an answer from the council, but in the meantime I'm panicking. Has anyone used the long birth certificate as proof as it has both our names and address on it? We've for married since the birth so would I also need wedding certificate for the name change? Are there any other documents anyone has used?

It says the application will be rejected without the corect documents so I don't want to mess up

I was in the same boat and called Child Benefit. They sent a letter with dc name, address and my name. (I claim it)

Assuming you are in England the LA are actually exceeding their authority by asking you to supply a birth certificate before you have been offered a place at a school (paragraph 2.5 of the 2012 admissions code). They can only ask for proof of address prior to places being allocated.
The paragraph also is very clear that the LA cannot ask for a "long" birth certificate as it has information about the parents that it is illegal to ask about, e.g. maiden names. Nor can they ask for a wedding certificate.
If they reject the application for requesting illegal information then they have completely and utterly blown the school admission code wide open.
Having had my little rant over the LA presuming rather too much, you have to also be realistic in needing to do what they demand even if it is legally wrong in my opinion. The long birth certificate would seem the obvious piece of information to submit, if it has both parents on it and a current address.

Thanks for the response. They didn't actually ask for those certificates, I suggested them as I did not have the documents they wanted (I've actually since found an old tax credits letter since before we had them stopped, and a child trust fund letter so I'm hoping they will do). I've also attached the birth certificate and wedding certificate to the application as all my documents are in my maiden name so I thought proof of my name change would help. I just don't want to chance it as it seems the child benefit letter may taken 10 days to arrive which is too late. Stressful!

Do the LA not realise that you can apply for CB and CT without having Pr or even guardianship?

LittlePickleHead · 07/01/2013 12:17

Obviously not! And what about those who have never applied for either? I mean, what other documents actually prove PR anyway? I called and mentioned the lack of letters and was asked what other documents I had, and I mentioned the long birth certificate, which I was told is fine. But surely that doesn't actually prove it either?

It proves you are the mother and therefore have PR. But I agree with Admission that this LA is in very dodgy ground.
