Anyone know which primary schools near Ross (5 miles ish) are good/ outstanding? Daughter is currently in a brilliant school and are worried about moving her to somewhere that isn't as good. Herefordshire / Gloucestershire area as we will find the school and then move near it.

I would highly recommend Whitchurch C of E Primary School. It's about 5 minutes from Ross in the car and its fab. My daughter is in nursery there and goes to school in September. Whitchurch is not our first choice simply because we live about 10 minutes away so I've chosen a more local school to our home (opposite direction to Ross though) but its our second choice and I'd love my daughter to go there. It's just had Ofsted and was graded outstanding.

Goodrich and Walford are also highly-regarded, and Brampton Abbotts is great for pastoral care. Depending on the age of your DD, it might be useful to consider making sure you move into the John Kyrle High School catchment as well. Ofsted rating systems have changed recently and I've heard of at least one drastic fall from grace so far, so do visit the schools and form your own opinions.

Thanks for the info on Whitchurch - the recent Ofsted isn't on RM School Finder so that's good to know. Was also thinking about Geoffrey Goffs and possibly Kings Caple.

Kings Caple is always on the brink of closure because it is so small (dsis was only child in her year group a couple of years ago). St Joseph's in Ross used to be very well thought of and is not particularly religious, Bridstow Primary gets mixed reviews.

Yes do check numbers and future likely numbers, Herefordshire tried to shut a lot of small schools a few years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they try again. I know rolls over the border in rural bits of Gloucester are very bad. There is just no affordable housing being built and rentals are expensive and rare.
Meanwhile town some town schools are full, you really do need to be careful.

Anyone else?

Not Ashfield Park. Terrible school. I had a few friends who went to St. Joseph's back int he day and it was very religious then (1995 ish)

Brunocat · 11/01/2013 18:00

Oohh, interesting. Could I ask why Ashfield is terrible?

I'm intrigued! Please tell me why it's awful - this is one sc hool we were considering!

My info is a few years out of date, but at the time (and for many years) ingrained bullying with pupils and staff. Poor pastoral care (incredibly poor). Pupils seem to leave as proper teenagers, not children - y5/6 all wear makeup, bras etc. Failure to protect in several serious child protection cases.

BreconBeBuggered · 14/01/2013 14:25

As far as I'm aware, the latest Ofsted for Ashfield Park was pretty good, and I understand the facilities are better than other primaries as it's that much bigger than all the others. However their headteacher has just left, after only a couple of years in post (local hearsay has it that this isn't going to be great for the school).

Ahh - always worried when anew head is going to be introduced - can always go either way.
