Hi All

I just wondered what views there are on both George Tomlinson and Gwyn Jones primary schools in Leytonstone? Just preparing to submit the school application...

Thanks

I'm in the catchment for Gwyn Jones so have put that down as my first choice. The recent SATs results showed GT overall had better pass rate at Level 4 but GJ appeared to have more slightly more children passing at Level 5+ which suited us better.

Only visited GJ and it seemed okay so cannot really compare it to GT. I think they are both much of a muchness. Both have before and after school clubs too.

Thanks Blossom8. I'm also in the catchment for Gwyn Jones and my daughter is at the nursery there (which is great) but I have a couple of reservations about the school which may be unfounded! Was slightly disappointed by the recent SATS in terms of the percentage getting English at Level 4. Although yes - good that the percentage getting level 5 is higher.

Thanks again

What stories if you dont mind telling? My neighbour whose child goes there mentioned that some parents were worried about bullying and teacher turnover. I put down GT as my fourth choice behind Barclays and Jenny Hammond. I've submitted my application today so imagine I cannot make alterations to my selections

Hi Blossom 8

No "stories" as such. My concerns are:

  • whether the school has clear / tangible aims and objectives to improve. I get a slight sense of complacency but this is entirely my perception and may be totally unfounded. Their website, for example, doesn't exactly present them as an outstanding school.I don't mean to say that a school must have a decent website to be good at teaching, but I felt it might be symptomatic of their general attitude...
  • whether they really do enough to stretch able children (this is a criticism from a neighbour)
  • whether there is genuinely enough space once the two form entry works its way up the school.

All said, I really WANT Gwyn to be the right school and my daughter is really happy at the nursery.

And I'm probably thinking WAY too much about this!

In terms of your application, you can make as many revisions as you like, but please don't listen too much to my ramblings which are NOT based on fact! :-)

Good luck

Hi SCE11. I agree with you and have similar reservations but after checking the recent SATs results, it appears that Gwyn Jones had the highest percentage of Level 5+ passes over GT, Barclays, Jenny Hammond and some schools in Wanstead. I think the primary schools that have done well in both Level 4 and 5 are based in Chingford.

I'll just have to supplement her school work at home if she is not challenged enough. We are on a wait-list to a catholic school so I'm hoping she will get into that before she starts reception next year.
