Year 1 writing curly caterpillar letters backwards

DS1 found writing tricky in reception (lack of fine motor skills) but has blossomed in year 1. Everything is coming on really nicely and he's been given huge encouragement at home / school. I am also confident the fine motor skills are finally there.

However - he has very much "learned" the curly caterpillar letters the wrong way round (ie a, c, d etc). This isn't the same as mixing up b and d - it is really engrained. I don't think it helps that his name (5 letters) has 3 of those letters in it - so he's just constantly repeated it wrongly for a long period of time.

Anyway - has anyone got any suggestions as to how to correct things now? He finally has the confidence in his writing where I can push things a bit. At the moment I'm just getting him to write row upon row of C's but its pretty dull. I was hoping someone might have some bright ideas? Thanks.

How about this? My DD had one bought for her when she was three and she still plays about with it now (also y1).

I shouldn't worry about it. It's probably related to mixing up left and right. I've taught eight year olds who put their shoes on the wrong feet. He'll grow out of it gradually with a few gentle reminders. You have to ask yourself, 'How many adults write like this?' Not many!

If you get paranoid about this, he'll pick up your anxiety and may carry on for that reason alone.
