Romans in year 4

DD is going to do the Romans after Christmas. I think it's Romans In Britain.

She's quite excited about it so I thought I'd look at some things with her over the holidays.

Are there any good sites online / books we can get from library?

There's a couple of roman places nearby but they're all shut!

There's an old Roman mumsnet thread here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/primary/176178-romans/AllOnOnePage

Bath?
There are several roman baths in London, not sure if they are always open, but worth checking out.
York has many roman bricks etc, and is very festive and pretty to boot.

And there are 2 national trust properties - Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire, and Letocetum Roman Baths and Museum in Staffordshire.

There is a section of Roman wall near the tower of london (and a statue)...

the london museum also has a roman section (from memory).

Where in the UK are you?
the unit often compares and contrasts Roman and Celtic lifestyles and attitudes, don't forget the other side!

Ooh, that might be good thing to focus on.

We are in south but husband is Scottish so that could be useful starting point!

The Museum of London section is very good, it would make a good outing during the Christmas break.

Fishbourne Roman Palace is on the South coast - just East of Portsmouth. My children always enjoy going there.

Hi fruitstick:

DD2 in Y3 also just did Romans and we found the following websites very useful:

BBC primary history Romans page: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/romans/

Minimus: The Mouse that made Latin fun
here: www.minimus-etc.co.uk/index.shtml

Some nice games and information on Latin/ Roman Britain

Primary Homework Help
page here: primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/Romans.html

The Roman Baths page (Bath & North Somerset Council) children?s page:
www.romanbaths.co.uk/just_for_fun.aspx

For Roman numerals: www.3dhistory.co.uk/fact-sheet/006-roman-numerals.php

Roman numeral bingo games: mathsticks.com/taxotouch/14,76

Roman Roads: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/romans/roads_and_places/

TOPIC Box has a lot of Roman history links here: www.topicbox.org.uk/History/Romans/

Over Christmas there are a number of options:
Visit Roman sites in your vicinity (try English Heritage/ National Trust web pages for ideas).

Visit a Roman Road near you: Wikipedia has a number of suggestions (list at bottom of page): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_roads_in_Britain

That should be a good start.

There's a fantastic Roman museum in St Albans if you're near there. Lovely town to visit as well!
