Where is logic in teaching cursive writing later?

Do some schools still teach cursive writing from the beginning? And why do some schools teach it two years later. It's painfull to watch my dd having to relearn to write she is left handed and is seriously struggling, it seems to have really set her back in a lot of areas in her education she was previously excelling in. It seems silly to not teach from the beginning.

Not all children in reception have the fine motor skills to learn cursive writing. Cursive writing can be completely and utterly unreadable.

My children's school does pre cursive writing, they learn to draw the letters with little flicks so it is easy to join them up later.

Prehaps a solution would be not to start school until seven years old.

I think it's silly to teach it from the beginning, as when you are learning to read, the alphabet you are writing looks totally different to the one you read in books.

Maybe they should not push it so much as an expectation at all then.

ours start doing the flick at the end of the letter from P1 and then in later years use the flick to start joining the letters together. DD is in P5 and now writes properly joined up (although its a bit messy)

Our school teaches cursive from the start. It seems unfair to teach one thing and then expect them to change.

Ds1 "got it" at the end of the autumn term in year 1 and all of a sudden his handwriting was amazing. Ds2 is currently in reception and his writing is coming on beautifully already.

I am on the fence with this tbh...

DS is in yr3 and has fab handwriting in print but is so used to writing like this he forgets/struggles to write cursively.

But at the same time DD is in reception and writing letters, words etc and does not have the fine motor skills to write cursively. Although she is learning to do the flicks!!

DD (8) was taught cursive, and tbh her writing was awful. We've recently moved, so she swapped schools, and her new teacher had taken her back to printing, as this school only starts cursive in year 3. I have aleady seen an improvement after 1 term.
I think it all depends on the child, I understand the advantages of not teaching two different styles, but it didn't work for us.

My DD has really taken to cursive writing (Y1). In reception they introduced the letters with the flicks, but mostly the kids printed, as did DD. One day a few weeks after starting Y1 she suddenly just 'got it' and now has really lovely writing (for her age anyway!)

I have found it to be gender specific.

Girls typically can pre-write or even forumlate non-cursive letters prior to starting school (being able to follow dotted lines, zig-zagz, trace over largeish letters etc) and, girls seem to want to do this an enjoy it.
Given that, girls tend to get along with writing fast in YR 1 and 2 if it is non-cursive.

Boys, tend to have practived much less mark making prior to school, oddly for boys a cursive format from YR onwards works surprisingly well.
Yes for some 18 months their writing looks a mess, but spellings are learnt more easily and as back muscles strenghthen legibility improves.

Confusion between non-cursive reading text (there are a few cursive reading schemes / downloads available) and writing cursively needs to be checked by being taught well.

Maybe it's the left handedness, she took a while to write anyway, her writing was complete mirror writing for a long time in yr.

My DS does cursive writing in Y1 now.Not all children write in his class.Only he does. His teacher is proud and happy. He was surprised when I told him he can do.In YR I thought him to do cursive at home.YR teacher said to wait till Y2.Now this school appreciates his ability. They are happy to support. We moved in summer. If he had been in old place,he will still be doing letters.
