I have just received my son's first school report from Middle school and I am concerned with some of the grades he has been given.....how can he be working at level 4 and 5 in some subjects and then level 1 and 2 in others?? Does anyone know why there is such a difference between the maths/english/science levels and the other subjects art/music/PE/RE/ICT/History etc?

I would expect history and English to be similar, but not art or PE. Which are the highest?

Would you mind telling us what the levels are? It's a bit hard to tell anything from what you've posted. Maybe your son is good at some subjects but not that good at others.

Middle school is secondary, isn't it? So he'll be doing subjects he's never done before. That's why he'll be getting lower levels in those subjects.

I thought middle school was where children from junior schools go before secondary, from 7-11.

Are you sure it's not 1-5 on a scale of effort or attainment, rather than national curriculum levels?

LIZS · 28/11/2012 18:40

Middle is usually 7 or 8 (yr 3/4) to 12 (year 7) 7-11 is junior , 4-7 infant. Are those actual NC Levels or an attainment marker of between 1 and 5 within the year group.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 28/11/2012 18:41

There's usually a disparity between the grades as they have only just started some subjects so the grades are lower - but that is quite a difference, don't remember it being quite that big.

Middle school round here is years 5-9

DD1 was at middle school until recently and at the end of Yr5 was working at L5 in English and Maths but L2 in French, Design and Technology and various other subjects which were either new or had not been assessed according to NC levels at primary. It's not unusual at all.

She's now in Yr7 and her levels now match much better though not perfectly yet.

Thanks for all the advice. He's 4c writing, 4a reading, 4a maths, 5c science but then 1a for ICT, 2b for art, 3c for french, 3b for history, 2a for PE, 1b in PSHE (whatever this is??) etc.... they just seem so poles apart. These grades are listed under the attainment levels as per the english/maths/science and he has different marks then for effort and behaviour so I am sure the are the NC scores.
