We are returning to the UK from overseas. Can someone please tell me: Are children supposed to be able to spell these words by the end of year 2 or just read them?? Thanks

I think that it is expected that a mythical typical child would be able to spell them, but it's certainly not expected that every child would be able to I'm sure.

Foundation Stage: only to read it, Year 1: spell it.

my daughters school they learned to spell them in reception if they could read them all. some could some couldn't so guess it depends on the child.

Our school hasn't sent any Reception words out yet. (They don't do it until the summer term.) It seems as though the words have a dual purpose. Because the teacher and I predict that my daughter can already read them. So she's going to be asked to spell them instead.

DD is in year 2 and we haven't had these words sent to us. Am sure she can read them but without knowing what they are I don't know if she can spell them.

In reception all children are expected to read and spell the "tricky" words from the first 100 high frequency words ...but they are not expected to learn them by sight. In year 1 they are expected to read the HFW automatically and spell most of the first 100 words accurately.

mrz. can i ask what sort of school you work in? Is it private or state? from previous posts yours seems to have higher expectations/achievement than allot of schools i am aware of. wish my daughter went to a bit more of a pushy (in a good way) school.

It's a state primary school in an area designated as in the top twenty for deprivation so we believe it is vital that our children can read, write and do maths to a high standard ...

That's really good, i am assuming its in England? we live in one of the 10 most deprived places in wales and i think it is generally a really good school i find they are not big on pushing too much. maybe this is because of the longer foundation phase and it might step up a gear in year 3. i just find it frustrating when they come home with obviously easy work when capable of much more.

Yes I'm in England. I don't feel we push but we do expect every child to be the best they can possibly be
