My ds1 is 9 and in year 5.
He has never liked literacy but tonight he came in from school and said he wanted to write a story.
So I got him some paper and a pen and he wrote the following (this is exactly as he wrote it);

Heloe. I have gone back to the Jurassic and I am going to tell you what I saw wene I arighved in the mid Jurassic. I looked in the forest then I saw an ornitherlesteas and I think it was hunting.
"Ocaiy I think it's hunting ooo it's running I have to keep up. I will tork laiter, so it's come to a stand still it looks like a young diplodikas. Ornitherlesteas normly eats lisards this is a treat this meal so now I will look for some more dinosaurs"
I'm back I have been serching the forist and I have come to the prerees and I have found a hyooj herd of diplodikas and they are feeding ooo look at that one that must be fourtee meters long this is a good vieing spot and I have seen a apatosaurus herd I think they are feeding to the left luckly they are not coming to cloas to me that one is pushing the tree over and now it is eating the leaves of the tree now I think I shall go and find some more dinosaurs hhh wow that is a braceaasaueus that is hyooj and that can reach the high braches and eats the high leaves and it baithes in water but now I am going to find more dinosaurs so I will see you later.

I have no idea whether this is what is expected in year 5.
He was dx as dyslexic last sept and he has been working really hard on his writing and spelling and phonics.

is that a 'stealth boast'?

dilbertina · 21/11/2012 22:13

OK in what way?

It's brilliant that his confidence has increased enough to actually want to write, I think that's what you should concentrate on rather than correcting errors at this point in time.

Badvocsanta · 21/11/2012 22:15

Sorry I don't understand?
My son has struggled since year 1 with literacy.
I just wondered if anyone could tell me whether the above is what would be expected in year 5 or whether he is still working below average NC.
What is boastful about my op exactly?

Yes,it is wonderful :)
He is so much more confident and at least now he spells phonetically so I can read it!
In year 3 he didn't use vowels at all :( his writing was like a foreign language.

I'm no expert by any means. But I'd say well done on the whole family. There are a few mistakes which simply could be put down to fatigue, like fourtee having no n on its end, and so on. But in subject analysis it's clever. If this was my child I would praise him like nothing on earth for producing that. Then I would play little games with him around the edges. I'd show him the word huge spelled properly and ask him if he wanted to replace his word with mine. And if he said that he didn't I'd leave the word he wrote. There is a huge difference between helping and patronising and if that's all his own work then that's brilliant. Anything he'd like help with I'd offer quickly.

goralka · 21/11/2012 22:17

oh I am just pulling your leg. Actually I thought it was rather good, especially that he wanted to do some writing.
My 14 year old girl would do worse than that, I am sure.

Badvocsanta · 21/11/2012 22:19

We have a word mat with the phonemes on which I might try and get him to use...I am wary of making home to much like school iyswim?
Am thrilled with it tbh.
He is reading a dinosaur cove reading book ATM which I think has heavily influenced his choice of subject matter!

Seems imaginative and well thought out. Definitely one to keep for his scrapbook.

goralka · 21/11/2012 22:24

My girl has really struggled with literacy too.......at that age there was not a vowel in sight...

BigcatLittlecat · 21/11/2012 22:25

As s teacher I think that for a boy who is not keen on writing that's a great piece of work. The content is amazing with its detail and he must have been really interested in the topic. It's got a short beginning and it's finished with a sentence. Spellings not so great but mainly phonetically correct so the reader is able to understand, in school with this year group they would probably have word banks/books to help them. I would maybe choose 1 or 2 words to look at with him but not loads as you don't want to put him off.
It's probably not at a year 5 level but it's not far off and I really wouldn't worry because if he starts writing like this I am sure he will come on in leaps and bounds.

Startail · 21/11/2012 22:25

Way more than my dyslexic DD1 would have written at that age and much more phonetic.

She tended to wild guess spellings and changing tense mid sentence.

A big well done and tell him to keep practicing.

Badvocsanta · 21/11/2012 22:25

Sorry to hear that goralka.
We have been using apples and pears by sound foundations workbooks.
Cannot recommend them highly enough.

Thank you all.
Am a tad anxious re his writing as where we live its a middle school system and he starts at a new school in sept (year 6) and I would love him to be more able to express himself on paper.
Verbally, he is very eloquent.

it has been very difficult to do any work at home with her as her twin brother could do it all and would lean over and make nasty comments and call her stupid....I just read to her really. Now she has found an interest (ponies) which is great as she is seeking information for herself and the school has had her in a small group which has done wonders.

goralka · 21/11/2012 22:30

I am sure he will be fine, really.

Badvocsanta · 21/11/2012 22:34

Oh that's good.
I think half the battle is getting them interested in a topic.
