Hi any advice please,
dd aged 10, had lots of speech therapy pre school, loves reading but spelling very poor. I requested a meeting with school and SENCO, who tried to tell me dd ok, even though spellings at 9.11 came out at 7.7 and reading at 9.6.
I am going to have a private assessment for dyslexia but not sure if it is that or auditory processing disorder or ? what.
What annoyed me, is school as in previous years so vague, there attitude was, we are monitoring it Confused
To make me more annoyed received a letter in post today, asking with reading results and asking us to read every day at home. Which yes I agree with, but how about the school listening to her read. In five years of school she has probably read half dozen times to a trained teacher.
What do I do now. I want the school to give me more specific ways of helping her improve. We do read with her, both to her and listening to her. But she can read well, just new words/names she finds difficult.
Just read about SMART goals on here. Should I write and request these?

I thoroughly recommend Apples and Pears www.soundfoundationsbooks.co.uk/
It's a structured scheme to teach your child spelling - you do a little bit every day (or as frequently as you can).
DS also had a poor spelling age compared to his actual age, but since we've been doing this I've seen some real improvements.

I believe there is also a reading series produced by the same organisation but can't comment on it as haven't used myself.

Thank you redskyatnight will look at this. Not totallly convinced will help as done years of phonics in the past, and still her phonic grasp is very poor, she doesnt hear the sounds. She can learn for spelling tests and gets all right.

Have you tried educationcity.com, which has a trial time for parents. The phonics work is good, but generally the whole of the literacy section would support her in her learning, and you may find she "accidentally" picks up more phonic learning.

Phonics isn't for everyone. As a basic level have you taken her to the doc for glue ear assessment and so on?

Does she have an IEP - that should have your SMART targets on there.

I would request a meeting with the school SENCo and see what they are going to do. Before you go, list your concerns. As for the reading to a teacher, often I hear my children read and don't note it in their reading book, as it is part of their guided reading and therefore written on a different form.

Hope this helps.

Hi thank you for all answers. Yes she has had lots of hearing tests and speech and language per school. And I have spent ages doing phonic work with her.
She doesn't have an IEP , should I push for this . Does it cost schools to do? I just want targets to be honest we can both work towards. Am going to ask school for SMART targets ( saw about them on here). But don't want to annoy school. Met with teacher and SENCO last week and wishy washy response. I repeatedly asked how we could help at home and no answer, they just said they were monitoring her. Good point teachers probably do her read in other ways at school. To be honest I wasn't bothered about her reading until school sent letter home, not just to me I have now found out. I know teachers have a difficult job but it is frustrating not knowing what to do. Years of parents evenings where teachers are less concerned than us, but she is slipping behind.
Thank you again for taking time to answer, I will check out Shark and education city
