Help with money Yr2

DD1 is 6.3 and in Yr2 (in Wales if that is relevant). Her maths is apparently pretty good but she needs help with money and understanding the concept. Any ideas of how can I help her?

Does she get pocket money?

Pocket money? Let her pay for small shopping with cash instead of card.

Junior monopoly - it's a much shorter game than adult version.

Playing with coins to add them up? DD is terrible with adding up money we always say 'you have 17p, what do you need to get to 20p' and without fail she always looks for the 3p coin

No she doesn't get any pocket money (yet!) unfortunately and I don't usually take her grocery shopping with me as she's in school. I'll have a look at Junior Monopoly and more coin familiarisation though. Thanks.

Even if you gave her 20p pocket money in exchange for normal chores around the house, it would give her a sense of the value of money, and work out how many 20ps you would need to get to £1. DS1 gets 50p a week in exchange for helping lay the table (he's 5 soon) and he is getting to grips with how money works. Otherwise it is very academic. Even at 50p a week it would take you 22 weeks to get to the price of Junior Monopoly - and I think it would do more good to be in the real world, surely?

Can Father Christmas put some play money in her stocking then you can play shops even if she doesn't actually go shopping with you. I think kids get less chance to handle money these days now we all pay for most things with a debit/credit card. We've had maths homework which was making up specific sums with coins, or I give DS a few coins and he has to work out the value and then use different coins to make the same amount, or I "pay" for shopping and he has to work out my change.
