How does your school inform you your child has had a head injury?

DS came home with an egg on his forehead today. He was collected from an after school club so didn't see teacher. No slip, no sticker so no idea what happened! Rather cross tbh. He did have first aid, a cold pack etc.

Letter in school bag (which I normally don't find till the next morning Hmm )

I think it is important to always inform parents, AND document exactly what happened. You never know when a head injury might turn out to be serious.

I say that as the parent of a child who had a head injury at school, which the school failed to take seriously, and resulted in severe concussion and 5 months off school.

I also think there needs to be more education of teachers and TAs about the signs of concussion so that a seriously injured child is not sent home alone. (secondary school) Angry

Head bump letter here, but they have just started also putting a coloured paper wristband on children so that parents notice even when the letter is hidden/lost. A good idea IMHO.

sticker
we are now getting an email too

Petershadow · 20/11/2012 11:34

I had this exact question last week
DS came out with a shiner, and no-one said anything

Turns out the office is supposed to call me
I am going to suggest a different system

At school it seems we get a phone call & asked to pick them up even if there is nothing wrong Angry I got called up for DS falling on his face, small graze, tiny fat lip, he wasn't bothered or in anyway distressed school phoned and told me I had to pick him up immediately... So I had a perfectly fine boy with me for the rest of the day and had to sort out cover for work for nothing!
After school club tell me when I pick up & have a standard letter - which seems more sensible to me. They would phone if it was serious.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 20/11/2012 11:51

We have a sticker, a slip (with advice) and a text.

All of which I receive on average, twice a week!

I would talk to the school about not having been informed.

We get a slip home but if they are concerned as they recently were with my daughter they will ring and send them home

Whyriskit · 20/11/2012 11:54

A slip in the bag. DS1 is in P1 (scotland) and has had 3 so far. Because last week's was in his school bag rather than his homework bag (where all the notes appear), I missed it til the next morning and then had a panic as he'd been grumpy and sick the night before, but hadn't told me.

BeckyBendyLegs · 20/11/2012 12:00

We get a 'lumps and bumps' note for any fall, but if it is to the head they always ring up even just to say what has happened and that the child is ok. I'd definitely raise with your school.

messtins · 20/11/2012 13:55

Sticker on the child's jumper if it happens at lunch or break (so the teacher is aware), paper slip sent home in book bag explaining what happened and what action was taken, immediate phone call home if it is serious. We have a sticker/slip at least once a week, have been called by school twice and asked to take him home once. I am the mother of Mr Bump.

Lexie1970 · 20/11/2012 14:45

We get sticker and generally teacher has come and told me what happened. One time however sticker fell off / wasn't given and as DS fringe was covering forehead didn't notice until almost home. That resulted in me phoning school first thing to find out what happened ...... he is in reception

systemsaddict · 20/11/2012 14:54

Accident form in the book bag, and if it's a bad one the teacher or TA catches the person picking up to explain what happened. Communication between school and after-school club can fall through a bit though.

clam · 20/11/2012 18:17

I take it you've had a forensic search through the bookbag?

Failing that, it may be that the slip is sitting on the teacher's table! I can't believe that the school doesn't have a system in place, even if slips are getting mislaid.

VerySmallSqueak · 20/11/2012 18:19

Phone call if at all concerned, slip in bookbag if not.

MuddlingMackem · 20/11/2012 19:06

Sticker on jumper, sometimes an accident slip.

If it seems more serious a phone call asking if you want to collect your child. Had this a couple of times with ds but ultimately he's stayed at school as they're happy to keep an eye out and will ring if the child seems to be getting worse.

Hulababy · 20/11/2012 19:10

Infant school I work at - sticker on jumper, head bump note in book bag. Though letter doesn't say how it occurred, just a standard note of what to look out for. Incident in accident book though at school - though parents don;t see this generally. If appropriate teacher or ta may speak to parent at pick up time.
