We've just bought an ipad for all the family but I haven't managed to find anything great for the children, education-wise that isn't American, apart from Timmy Time numbers which becomes tedious quite quickly.

Any got any ideas?

We use Math Magic, which is American but still good! Also pocket phonic, from the UK. Though they are not so educational, cut the rope and cat physics are good fun!

Squeebles. dd1 (Y4) and dd2 (Y1) both play spelling one (you can make your own lists), dd2 also plays the maths addition one, and dd1 the multiplication one.

Mathspop also popular with dd2

Try 'first phonic sounds' on the iPad, it's an education based app for kids learning the alphabet, all the letter sounds are in an english accent!

Has lots of really nice animations too, would highly recommend

jellysmum77 · 26/05/2013 18:12

Fudgy Bear is a nice early years one and the Mr Thorne does Phonics ones are good too.

newlark · 26/05/2013 20:22

My dcs both love a game called "Where's my water?" - although it looks like a game rather than being specifically educational I think it is great for both logical thinking (doing actions in the right order and understanding the impact of different actions) and for basic science/physics (predicting the trajectory of jets of water and getting them to the right place) - my 4 and 6 yr olds love it and I know some older ones that do.

Picquiz kids is good for spelling.

This is US but DD loves it and I really like it:

first Grade Learning Game

Otherwise:
Barn Yard Mahjong

Where's my water is great.

TheSurgeonsMate · 30/05/2013 11:52

mrz what a great link! Thanks for that, I visit loads of good American app review sites and am always looking for a British version.

iwantavuvezela · 30/05/2013 11:57

Thanks for that link mrz, really useful.

DTisMYdoctor · 30/05/2013 12:27

Another thanks for that link mrz!

Bakingtins · 30/05/2013 13:23

I'm sure somebody on this thread recommended Dragonbox algebra - I came back to thank them because it is great and my 6 yr old is doing really quite complicated algebra and loving it. The post has disappeared (or I dreamed the whole thing...) Confused

My little boys favourites so far are anything from Ocean House Media and Pathway apps, these 2 are ones which ive enjoyed reading with him:

Niles Snappington free version:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.PathwayApps.NilesSnappingtonPreview&hl=en_GB

Dr Seuss £3:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oceanhouse_media.bookcatinthehat_app&hl=en_GB

We recently bought Little Poets and my son loves it - an app teaching poetry with very nice cartoon animations. He is five and he is about right age for it.

millsdev · 13/02/2014 14:40

My 5 year old started spellings last term. I had trouble getting him to do them. I tried to find an app that would allow me to put in the school spellings and play a game. I couldn't find one, so I wrote one. It is called 'Spelling Hangman' and is available on the App Store (SM). He uses it every day and it has really helped his spellings.

itunes.apple.com/gb/app/id769196201?mt=8&affId=1736887

Sounds-Write's Synthetic Phonics beginning reading& spelling app. 1st three units are free. ''This app offers a variety of activities to develop the skills of blending and segmenting, sound spelling correspondence, word reading and writing and some sentences reading and writing''.

EkaS · 13/02/2014 22:57

It's not an app but Khan Academy videos are excellent reaching tools. His explanations of concepts are done from so many different angles that my DD gets it.

AnnaVR · 14/02/2014 13:40

Mystery Math Town is great.
