Do you think this is a lot of homework for Year 3?

DD1 was only 7 in July, this is the homework that was set for half term:

2 pages of Mental Maths, double the usual exercises on MyMaths, two literacy worksheets, a set of spellings and some research into their next topic.

She is pretty keen and is working at level 3b/3c in everything, and as long as I break it down into manageable chunks with her she gets through it, but I just think the quantity is huge for a seven year old. I'm worried what will be ahead of her in years to come.

Is that per week or over the half term? ds1 ( yr3) gets 1 maths sheet, i lit sheet and a set of spellings per week and then a topic /research based h.worl to complete over the term- this is an ok amount for him to get through at the moment .

Over the half term, so a week and a day. It's about 2.5 times the usual homework.

Oh right, over the holiday, that's too much then, I dont think they should set h.work over the holidays , apart from topic based stuff, and I 'm a teacher!!

No home work here- too much I think.

DS would love to have had homework over the holidays and got nothing...

He is also in yr3 and working at about the same level as your DD...

But he is an odd child who likes worksheets etc Although I agree it does sound a lot....

TBH I would just give it a decent go in terms of time wise and if it takes too long then report how long it took iyswim....and stop after a decent time if that makes sense.

DD on the other hand is in reception and has got loads of homework to do

Looks like they don't quite understand the word 'holiday'.

Sounds miserable to me.

dd1, for the first time since Y1, has a teacher who thinks half-terms are for holidays - reading only! Rest of the time she's strict and uncompromising, but hurrah for half-term slacking off

That said, Y1 dd2 has a fair bit of homework

It sounds like masses, even if it wasn't half term! DD2 is in Yr3, working at a similar level, and gets one literacy and one numeracy task per week, plus daily reading. Nothing at all in holidays, other than a vague exhortation to keep reading and practising times tables.

We get a longer topic-based project twice a term, but the deadlines never extend over half term. She's on holiday!

My DD2 is in Yr5 and has only got her normal weekend lot of homework to do over half term.

I think you should implement a 'minimalist' approach to this excessive homework, OP - I mean, it isn't as if they're going to forget what they've learned int he course of a week off!

Yes it's too much, in year 3 they don't need to have any over half-term.

My son, who is taking GCSEs this year, said even his maths teacher doesn't think they should have homework over the holiday.
