Good Independent Schools in South East Hampshire

My family is moving to Fareham in South East Hampshire shortly (close to Portsmouth) and am looking for good schools in the area. I have one DS in secondary school and one DD in primary school. Can anyone recommend any good independent schools for me?

I have been recommened a few from work colleagues - Boundary Oak, The Gregg School, King Edward, Meoncross, Portsmouth Grammer School, Portsmouth High, West Hill Park, Wykeham.

Does anyone know if these are any good or could recommend any others for me to consider?

Many children cross the water each day to Ryde School by hovercraft.

We are based in Fareham and my son is at West Hill Park which he adores. It takes them up to aged 13 and feeds into a lot of good schools, including PGS which is a popular choice around here. Have friends whose children are at PGS and Boundary Oak and all seem v. happy.

Traffic can be horrid all around this area, if I were living in Fareham I would not consider driving to Portsmouth or Southampton for schooling unless you are driving anyway that way to work.
Boundary Oak and West Hill Park are both prep schools to 13.
There is also wykeham house girls school and Meoncross school ( mixed) both take children to 16.

These would be a much nicer commute to school for you.

Piggychunk · 19/10/2012 14:32

Oh meant to add the commute depends on age of course a child of 12/13+ commuting to Portsmouth by school bus wouldn't be as mad as a 5 yr old with that drive

The commute to Southampton would probably be pretty horrible too.

I went to greggs, many many years ago. There were 2 in my year out of 60 who came in from titchfield, but none from further east. So either the schools local to fareham are good enough, or it just isn't worth the commute. That said, greggs has moved location, and it might have a suitable bus route for fareham. Generally, fareham is more closely associated with Portsmouth than Southampton. Personally, I thought greggs was pretty shit, and some of the teaching was shocking. That is probably different now....

Different now? It certainly is. The Gregg School has a recent 'Outstanding' inspection report, and an increasingly good reputation in the city of Southampton. The teaching is excellent, and the care of students second to none.

I agree with Mumsiepoo about The Gregg School. The most recent report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate gave Greggs an absolutely glowing report across the board - curriculum, facilities, standard of teaching etc... were all very highly praised! A good website that has info on all the independent schools in Hampshire is privateschoolsinhampshire.co.uk. Schools in Fareham, Portsmouth and Southampton are all discussed on there. Good luck!
