Is this standard of work OK/normal for a y2 child? Worried.

Bit of background, DS is on an IEP, he struggled A LOT in YR and Y1, a SEN was mentioned and the school got the ball rolling for an ed physiologist to come in and see him but in the end his teacher decided he was fine. We do a lot of work with him at home and she said this was showing and he was catching up and maturing.

He's come on in leaps and bounds since starting Y2, he adores his current teacher and it's been mentioned that his concentration has improved and his work is getting much neater.

Anyway DS handed me a story the other day...

"Wons a pona time ther was a verey big howse with some pipal in it. The pipal was bisey thay was conshinrating like (DS's name). He dose god wock he got a smilley stickuer he was hapey so hapey he wonted to stay. He wonted to stay at (name of school)."

Now seeing as his work was unreadable at the end of Y1 and this was very neat and done on blank paper in straight lines, I was Grin and it's gone on the fridge! A friend of mine came over yesterday read it and said "well he's clearly dyslexic isn't he?" She's a SEN teaching assistant at a secondary school so not totally unaware of these things but I'm panicking now that he might have an issue and we've cancelled the tests he was going to take.

Your son is using sounds to build words and his next step is to learn which spelling of the sounds he should use ... nothing at all to suggest dyslexia (even if he was in Y7)

He is using his phonic knowledge to write words which is great at year 2.
Ok, not all the words are spelt correctly but - and here's the thing - you can read it.
It makes sense.
He is using vowels and not confusing b and d.
Don't worry :)
Try googling phonics play - they have some great free phonics games for kids.

Sounds good to me (SEN teacher & mother of Y2 child).

Feel very good. Thats pretty much how my DS (year 4) still spells - even spells busy the same Grin

His is lower than expected level by a bit but makes an effort. He has the DST (dyslexia screening test) which showed not at risk. There were some areas he had difficulty with but they can help with these.

Oh and he still doesn't actually know the difference between b and d. Uses bed as a reference but doesn't actually know. He also can't spell a work if you say A B C D, he'll go A, whats next!

Your DS sounds lovely and very proud of himself - which he should be Grin

I think that on the whole it is fine. Phonics used, writing overall fine - in lines, with spaces etc.

(I have a DS in y2 btw)

However, the only thing I would say is that my DS (who also struggled in the past but now is not struggling) would spell a few more words correctly. eg wanted, does, they. This is because he has learnt them for spelling tests so I suppose it really depends on what sort of words your DS has had in his spelling tests. It will also come with reading because he will keep seeing want instead of wont etc and then will start using it in his writing.

Orange reading level also fine IMO. Kids on blue or lower at this stage in Y2 are getting some extra help at our school.
