Manga magazines for children

Can anybody suggest any manga magazines for children? My daughter likes drawing manga, especially girls, not monsters or dragon ball stuff. I was thinking of getting her a subscription as a xmas present.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What's a manga magazine?

mrz · 14/10/2012 12:59

manga originated in Japan and is considered an art form as well as entertainment. My eldest has a huge collection of manga novels and works (including Shakespeare and many of the classics)

There are a number of online manga sites

Most of them are online, but you'd need to be selective. How old is she?

You could try a subscription to The Phoenix weekly magazine: lots of comics of all styles including manga, very girl-friendly. Have a look online first I'd suggest: www.thephoenixcomic.co.uk

What about The Phoenix? Just Manga is so boring restrictive, loads of different comics styles out there to learn & try.

lljkk · 14/10/2012 13:54

lol, X post.

comixminx · 14/10/2012 13:56

Ps there's a section in the Phoenix every week with drawing / writing / comics creation tips. The person who does that, Neill Cameron, Aldo had a manga-style book you can buy in the shops: it's called Mo-Bot High. Main character is a girl: it features giant robots, but again in a very girl-friendly way.

comixminx · 14/10/2012 13:57

Aldo = also, damn the autocorrect.

comixminx · 14/10/2012 13:58

Hah, snap, lljkk! Do you buy it for your kids too? Our DD is only 2 do though she has started to ask for it to be read to her, it's more for us to enjoy at this point... Grin

List of PG-rated manga, though some of them still don't look that kid-friendly:

comixminx · 14/10/2012 14:05

Sorry for spamming! On reflection, I don't think that's PG in the sense of age rating, I think it's cos of the website author whose initials are PG... SOme of those mangas will be kid-friendly but you'll have to read the reviews to see.

I bought manga drawing pens and instructional books for the children last year.

I've just asked dd1 about magazines, and she said this one www.neomag.co.uk/magazine/subscribe though I'm not sure of the age range.

Another good idea might be to buy selection of manga books from different series, my girls copied selections from those, and enjoyed reading them, of course.

DS-almost 13 gets The Phoenix, he got the DFC before that.

theweekendisnear · 14/10/2012 21:58

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!!! I will have a look at all the links mentioned here!!

My DD is 10, by the way. I tried to find some Manga magazines before posting on Mumsnet, but what I found looked too old for her.

So thanks so much again!

Oh, and I am thinking of getting some Manga drawing pens, but what I've seen in shops are really expensive. Any suggestions here?
