Year 1 reading

I feel my dc is a little behind in reading, as the book they have just been moved up to is yellow. This book band seems to be 4-5 year olds, which to me is for someone in a Reception class. I do make sure that my dc reads every day.

What colour book band is your dc in year 1 on?

Also, how long each day does your dc read to you for?

Why the patronising tone? This is the expectation we have had from both LA and ofsted so perfectly 'common sense'.

I no idea what level my dd is on. She seems to come home with different level books from different reading schemes every week. Sometimes she might come home with a very 'easy' book, but I think that's because the teacher wants to consolidate practice they might have done in class of ax particular sound.

I try not to get Hung up on it. She's clearly progressing and is enjoying it, so all is good.

Patronising ? did you read your post? What I posted is quoted (which is why it had speech marks in the original post) so perhaps you should as the government why they are patronising you... yellowsun

1A isn't the National expectation for Y1 and in fact if a child leaves Y1 at level 1A they should be level 2A at the end of KS1 (1 full level progress per year in KS1 is the expectation)

Ds was on gold at end of reception but they now give home books that do not appear to be colour banded but not a free-reader.
Dd who will start school Next year I think will struggle much more but I am prepared for this and will try to let her go at her own pace regardless of national expectations.

So does that mean there's no 'expectation' for the end of Y1, but schools generally feel on track if most of their pupils are at least 1b by then?

Exactly Rosebud, there are no official expectations for children in Y1 only for end of Key Stages

Thanks, the mystery of 'levels' is beginning to make sense to me now.

Just in time for the system to change, I expect.

The government announced they plan to scrap levels ...but watch this space

Elibean · 07/10/2012 15:58

Really? Oooh, I will watch this space....scrap all levels, or just for KS1 please mrz?

I'm always amazed at how people know what other children are on in their child's class, other than those who listen to them read. I wouldn't have a clue.

Dd has been bringing home stage 6 ORT, green band 'big cat' and this week, yellow band 'big cat'. She finds the higher level books quite difficult and the lower level books easy. So she's somewhere in the middle, I think.

Likke Mrz's school we aim for a full NC level per year in KS1 in all subjects, so 1b at end Year 1 and 2b at the end of Year 2 [though of course that implies some link between end of Reception EYFS levels and a '1 level below 1b' which of course doesn't exist...ho hum.] And as 'average' children seem to be as rare as hen's teeth, anything between a 1c (or less) and a 2c (or more) frequently comes out on track for 2b or more at the end of Year 2!

My DS 5 (year 1) is on pink level but he can't really read them. I've been told that he's going to be measured on p levels and won't be included in year 2 SATS. Is this correct that some children aren't included? (Sorry for hijacking OP).

He will be included in the SATs but not take any of the tests.

Report
sazale · 07/10/2012 18:10

Thanks mrz. Is there a certain level a child needs to be above to take the tests?

DDs school havent mentioned these levels at all. Nothing about what level DD is on or what she is expected to achieve.

So is an Orange/Turquoise bookband about what they are aiming at for end of year 1?

All children working at level 1 or above have to do a task or test
