How do you find out out the unwritten rules?

DD just started in YR. I'm a single parent working full time with little contact with other parents who know the ropes. There is a regular newsletter from school telling you what's happening and anything you need to do. BUT.. it doesn't tell you the full story.

As an example we were told to provide a child's shoebox filled with food for distribution to pensioners. I duly did as requested only to find out that the expectation was that I was supposed to cover the box (and preferably something bigger than a small shoebox), get DD to decorate it and add a personal message. When I queried this I was told this was what they always did!

Other than via telepathy how do you pick these things up and what events are equally likely to be poohtraps?

I was you, duffy! An involuntary 'oh my God, remember that' escaped my mouth as I was reading you op.

Ds in Y5 now and as long as you don't forget things like non-uniform day, dinner/school trip money which they absolutley should either send a newsletter out with dates and remind nearer time - I just don't worry about the competitivness any more. There's always a group of them, Mums usually, but the odd Dad at our school, trying to keep up would be futile unless you're a) wonder woman and b) care.

Higher up school it was amusing to see the hand crafted, naturally sourced, amazingly detailled hats that came in on one occasion for 'Hat Day'. One had bits of real moss, ivy, daffodils and wire with crepe paper butterflies extending from it.

The little boy who'd been given some felt tips, glue and glitter and clearly made a hat himself won the small prize on offer.

Does your school publishes a diary on their website? If so, check it regular and see what kind of previous events the school did.
Ours goes back to last Christmas and I can see all the "wear pink/yellow/red", dress up and any other special days on it.

Otherwise ask the teacher for more information. We are lucky, our school is bending backwards to tell us dates at least 2-3 weeks in advance and provides lots of information. I love my head and DD's teachers.
