DD has come home upset a few times saying she can't concentrate in class because the girl next to her keeps talking and distracting her. I've spoken to her teacher about this and told her that DD has asked to move and teacher says that the girl isn't doing it on purpose but she always reads out loud as she's not learnt to read in her head and she will eventually. It seems this extends to reading out sums as well as instructions, questions, books etc.

I'm not surprised dd wants to move. She also says the girl works slowly so if dd is trying to work out a question 4 for example the girl is reading question 2 out to herself.

They are in year 2. Is this normal or should I take it up with her teacher again. I am worried as its making DD really unhappy and worriedd about going to school

Or it was just part of a particularly ordinary early term assessment to sort out ability groups which would have happened anyway

Glad she's happy, anyway.

I am glad she is now more settled but I am a little confused why your child is happy someone else works at the same speed as her? This would set more alarm bells for me as it would tell me they are maybe watching what each other is doing or copying in order to know this. If they are working silently as was the reason for her to be moved, they would not know where someone is up to in their work unless they are reading their neighbour's work or talking about it! I would be conscious that the child before was slow and your child disliked this for a reason.....if it is because they have relied on others for answers (which can be the case) then she would be made up at being put with someone who works at the same pace. I would happen keep an eye on her learning and check she is doing her own work and not relying on others.

A very good point slipspider I'll keep an eye on it. I don't think its the case as she has no difficullty with her homework but it is certainly possible.

She said she disliked the other girl being slow beccause she was reading out questions DD had already completed and it was confusing her.
