Behavioural Optomotrist

Has anyone taken their child to a Behavioural Optomotrist? I want to get DD's eyes thoroughly tested she is six years old with SEN and is complaining a lot about not liking handwriting at school plus other things that are on the checklist for the BO's I have looked at.

I was looking for a bit more info about what the examination involves and also after implementing the given exercises did anyone see improvements in their childs learning at school?

Thanks

Well today we went to the 'Dyslexic Research Trust' in Reading (who I thought were behavioural optomotrists (?sp) but now know aren't!!

They did however test eye tracking, focusing, contrast, colourblindness, vision, 3D stuff etc. They also tested ability with reading words, spelling, memory, verbal and non-verbal cues.

The then put all the results together and use some sort of magic formula to give a score, and depending on that score, depends whether the child is dyslexic or not.

Well, dd was tested for dyslexia in Year 2. I was told she wasn't. But the last 3 years have been really hard for her (and me!!) with learning to read. And awful spelling. I have just known that there was something there that was stopping her reading. But just didn't know what.

Well, today I have been told she is in fact dyslexic with a reading age of 7.1yrs (she is 8.8yrs).

Now this is the embarassing part, I always thought she was kind of 'thick' - I know, I know - a horrible word Blush but she seems to have been struggling with everything. But today I found out she isn't. She has a memory of an almost 12 year old, verbal skill of something like a 10.3yr old and spelling of 8.3yrs - which is good for her! So the difference between her 'ability' (in the olden days I was told this would have been called her 'intelligence') and her reading age is really quite big.

And this gives rise to the diagnosis of dyslexia.

So......she has been given yellow glasses for reading, writing and sums and given the 'Toe by Toe' book to complete. 10 mins a night for EIGHTEEN months!!! But we will do it.

I am SO pleased I went today. I now know there is a reason for her struggling and we can help her improve.

Sorry it's long, but I did promise an update!

Yay for you, Kerry. It's quite mind-blowing when you get those figures isn't it? The dyslexia label doesn't get you much help, but it's helped me lots to understand why he finds some things tricky and it's done masses for my son's self esteem too. Just being told by the Ed Psych that he was extremely bright helped him hugely. Smile
