My dd has just finished reading (i have read to her ) Peter Rabbit books.
Can anyone suggest any chapter books ? We have read fairy tales, most (all), Julia Donaldson books and are now prepared to get into chapter books.

I recommend starting with Roald Dahl. DS is almost 6. Our first novel was The Twits, we've since worked through james and the Giant peach, fantastic Mr fox, george's marvellous medicine and The BFG. he's loved all of them.

The Sophie series of books by Dick King-Smith is good at that age, esp if she likes animals. My Naughty Little Sister and The faraway Tree (both quite old fashioned but my two like them). I found Roald Dahl books doesn't appeal to my 5 year old but her big sister liked them, especially Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Watching this with interest for other suggestions!

Gobbolino the Witch's Cat, The Little Wooden Horse, Faraway Tree (there are three books which you can get in an all in one edition for less cash), Paddington Bear, The Wombles, The Worst Witch series, Frog and Toad (Arnold Lobel, also BRILLIANT for getting the child to read alternate pages when appropriate as most is very accessible for a child who has got past the first few reading levels), Ottoline books (beautiful pictures), Claude at the Circus (and there are two more, also lovely pictures but a little more grown up than your average picture book and in chapter book format), all Moomin books, Dick King-Smith, Pippi Longstocking - these were what went down well with my five year old (now just six but still loving all of them).

My DD found Roald Dahl too scary but she is a huge scaredy cat!

Thank you. I think I will go for the Wombles. Now I need to find a reasonably priced pack from somewhere!
Thank you so much everyone.
The titles bring back lovely memories of reading these in my parents garden. Sigh!

Nostalgia.
