Y1 how often do your children get a new reading book?

DS has been back at school for 3 weeks. His teacher was really quick of the mark in assessing his level and sending a reading book home.

They have changed their literacy curriculum this year to read, write inc. although we were told that the books that they send home will not be from this scheme.

The pattern appears to be that DS is bringing 1 book home a week (green band). He reads it each evening (as requested by the school), but after 3 or 4 nights he has memorised the text and is pretty bored of the book.

School ask that we make a note in the reading record each evening, so I've been putting DS has now memorised this book.

I'm obviously no expert, but I would have thought that ideally school should be changing books more frequently or sending more home each time?

Any thoughts?

Once a week. Don't get me started.

When she's finished a book usually, although sometimes the teacher misses that she's finished the one she has.

It's a bit relentless in a way as we don't often get time to mix in other stuff, so I don't mind the occasional misses as it gives us a chance to read something from home or the library otherwise we only get to do that at the weekend.

DS (Y1) gets new books twice a week (as long as he has finished the previous ones). But if over the weekend for example he finishes them I just give him library/home books to read.

Every night average about 30 or so pages so a bit exhausting

Goldenjubilee10 · 20/09/2012 22:17

Once a week, poetry this week and last week as well!

SizzleSazz · 20/09/2012 22:17

DD chooses her own from 'her' band box every day.

Why is there so much variation, does anyone know?

We get a new book every day. Last year in reception it was only changed 3 times a week, but he read with an adult three times a week. In Y1 he only reads with an adult (the class teacher) once a week.

DS3 is in year one, he gets 3 or 4 reading books at a time and any he has completed get changed once a week - he's reading purple level so they have a lot of text in - it can take him two or three nights to read a whole one so he generally changes 2 each week. He also has a guided reading session in school in a group of 4 children but the guided reading book doesn't come home.

Ds is in year 1 and gets to pick a book of his choice once a week. There not expected to read it every night though, I think he would get pretty bored if he did. Can you not go to the libary and get similar level books? Or play games with the book like how many times can you find the word 'the' etc? that way there actually reading, rather than memorising.

Last year in P.2, dd1 had the same reading book for 2 days, then it changed. Yet this year in P.3, she seems to have the same book all week. I've asked her if she's meant to change it, but she says no. Seems a bit strange.

OP here....

I overheard DS's teacher early last week, telling another parent that they should be taking two reading books home at a time. So I asked him to makes sure he chooses/ asks for two.

Then on Friday DS told me he's been told by his teacher that he can change each book after he's read it twice.

So the situation has been resolved. I'm not sure whether DS hadn't been following instructions initially which was causing the issue....

Many thanks for all your posts.

Dd is Yr 1. We get one book a week. Sore point as dd memorises it. Had to have a word with the teacher after we had had the last one three weeks. New book now but its band three and teacher has written in reading diary "Well done, band four soon" Weve had band four books since the end of reception. Starting to sound PFB with the teacher but DD loves reading and gets easily bored with one easy book a week. We do read other stuff at home but sure the teacher would raise her eyebrows at this !

scootle · 29/09/2012 22:00

Four a week in YR - have not had a single book in Y1 yet. Am pretty astonished!

elkiedee · 29/09/2012 22:57

Gosh, now I'm feeling really lax. We have a lot of story books and a set of ORT books (which DS1 actually quite likes) at home and we do sometimes look at those, plus dp and I read aloud to them every night. DS1 did ask to read at bedtime but he and I were tired and DS2 comes in and really they both need to have stories as settling to bed at that point rather than reading practice.

Since I've very recently been made redundant and am going to be working from home for at least this year, I'm planning to take the opportunity to establish a better reading routine, but reading this makes me feel terribly guilty!

DD1's books get changed on a Monday and Thursday but she gets 2 each time.
