DD still on Read Write Inc and maths help? Is it ok?

She is just turned 8 years old and the youngest in her year 4 and only began at this primary last year....she'd been at a private prep and when she arrived at her new school, they found gaps in her learning so put her on Read Write inc, Overcoming Maths Barriers and Rapid Reading programme. (I am very grateful for all the school have done by the way)

A note came home yesterday to let me know she has made "Very good progress" and that she's still being kept on the extra help on a weekly basis.

Is that ok? Or should I be hoping she'd be off the extra help now?

Some of her levels were behind when she began but she moved up 2 levels in everything over year three...and is now right where she is meant to be and above in something (I can't remember which!)

The teacher wrote a note on the letter to say that her reading is "Extremely fluent" and her spelling is in the top 5% of the class....but she's still needing help with comprehension and putting good sentences together when she writes a story or essay.

She reads books meant for young teens generally (I choose appropriate ones for her age!)

She is very, very shy and I wonder if she's not responding well to questions about stories because of this? How can she read and enjoy What Katy Did and Rebbecca of Sunnybrook Farm for example and yet not be good at comprehension?

Do not worry. Any extra help that you get from the school it is very good. Even if she does not need that help really, she can get one to one focus and learn quicker than her class mates.

Do not worry if she needs the help or not just be happy she gets it from the school. It is a bit like a private tutor and you do not need to pay for it. Does not sound this good? It is isn't it?

I would be happy if my son school can help him with his English. But they won't because they think he is in Reception so he can pick it up. But imagine if he could get the help how much more his English would excel in a shorter time.

I know I did think that it is a bit like private tuition but in a small group....she seems to like the extra help too...she likes the teachers she has for the sessions.

I just wondered if she would always need this...throughout primary. Is your son in any activities out of school? That would help too....maybe you ought to look at him joining the Beavers? That's like Scouts but for younger boys.
