a friend got her DD successfully held back aged about 8 or 9 (from memory) she had to get head teacher and board of governors to agree. I know others who actually had significant reasons which were denied.

I think its pretty uncommon.

I know its uncommon , but DD is really struggling , not sure how much of this is due to physical health issues . The school has known about issues for many years , she had a initial referal to speacial needs cordinator , but nothing further since . Would like her to have a dyslexia assessment as there is a family history. Also not concerned about social inpact as she is in a class with more than one year group so has friends in the lower year . She will be ten when she leaves primary as she is an August birthday .

I think it is easier to obtain if you have a statement.

Our DD1 is starting reception tomorrow with a statement and it has already been mentioned to us twice about the possibility of keeping her in reception for 2 years (so holding her back a year).

If they're mixed years, it may be that you need to investigate more what would happen at secondary level. It may be that secondary insist on them staying in the right year. I think you might need to talk to LA on that.

I am a SENCO and have twice applied to keep a child back a year. One was successful and one wasn't. Our LEA is dead against it as technically the child could then leave school a year early without having taken any qualifications. i had to get reports from quite a few professionals all backing the decision to let the child in question stay in Reception when the rest of his cohort went up to Year 1.
We have another child who has been allowed to repeat Yr 6 but on the understanding that he will then miss out Yr 7 and go straight into Yr 8.

So it's pretty hard.
