Yr 1 reading

Hi in just curious to know how reading works in yr one. They were given books pretty much straight away in reception yet a week and a half into yr 1 and we have had nothing am also worried what stage they will put dd onto as have had to push for higher levels twice now due to dd finding the books to easy and getting bored and fed up am worried its gonna take forever to get through the stage she left reception on. Or will yr one teacher be assessing and assigning stage accordingly or will dd just have to carry on where she left off?

I volunteer in a year one class with a reading program (and also have a year one child) so I can give you some idea of how it works at our school. The children are given one or more home reader books that are changed once a week. They also have a 'guided reading session' in school once a week where they read in a small group of similar ability children. The book they use for the guided read stays in school because too many children were losing them making the sets incomplete and therefore useless. The guided reading session focuses more on comprehension and questioning about the story than reading the words. My son's home readers are a level higher than the guided read book which I think is quite normal.

The teacher I work with regularly assesses which level a child should be on. Sometimes they will be given books at a level 'too easy' for them for a specific purpose ie developing understanding of the story rather than just reading the words.

You may find she is given books at the level she was at at the end of reception to begin with but if the teacher thinks they are too easy she will hopefully move her up sooner rather than later.

She was put onto green but only as I asked for them given that the band below were boring the hell out of her and she was finding them to easy. They still continued to send her home with the blue alongside the green as apparently she had to finish them all impossible as there were hundreds of the fecking things and they spent weeks winding down before Hols resulting in one book a week for ages . She hated b&c as it is without being forced to do ones that are lower levels than the ones she does at home .

She did say she had been " chosen to read to the class" would this be the guided reading?

DD is yr1 and I had to ask last week as she had brought her guided reading book home (in a zip wallet) but no normal reading book as yet - The teacher stuck a note up on the door the next day so I guess I wasn't the only one to ask! Here's what happens in DD's school:

Guided reading once a week, which seems to be at their 'level' her first one was green band (same as last year) and current one is orange - no idea if that is now her level, but she did seem ready to move up.

normal reading books can be brought home daily, they get to choose themselves - and don't have to choose from their colour band... don't ask me why!

They also get to go to the school library on a friday and bring home a book for the weekend.

basically I am not sure that I'll ever know what band she's on again, but guessing following the guided level is about right!

That sounds pretty confusing Confused she has talked about reading in class and we read alot at home I guess I just worry that she's gonna end up stuck on books we r working so hard towards hopefully getting off if that makes sense :) but least I know now that it's not anything to worry about just yet that she hasn't brought any books home. I really can't face another year of battles with them.
