I've always been against this but it's probably my only chance to visit my brother in Canada.

dd1 started school 2 weeks ago. Originally our plan was to go to Canada last year. We planned a 2nd baby and were going to take him/her at about 3 months old so I could breast feed on the plane and all would be good. However, this didn't go to plan and we were blessed with wonderful twin girls. Dh and I could not face a flight of 9 1/2 hours with a 3yo and twin babies. So now dd1 is 4 and dtds are 1. If we don't go to Canada before dtds are 2 then I won't be able to justify the cost of us going as it will be close to a small house deposit, plus db is planning to have a family so their currently large house won't be able to accommodate us forever. So we thought we'd go this year. However, db travels a lot for work all through north America. He will be home for some of the Easter hols and a little bit after so we are thinking about taking dd1 out of school for the week after the Easter hols.

I'm worried how the school will react as I'm new to it all and really struggling with it morally. I think the trip will be really educational (visiting glaciers, trip to Rockies etc) and we'll stay at my brother's so dd1 can do homework easily.

Sorry to ramble on. I just think I'm so close to it I can't see all the sides. Should I take her out of school or accept I won't see my brother for many years except on Skype?

GO!!!!!!!

You'd be utterly bonkers not to go from an educational point of view and a family point of view.

Extremely Envy

Your brother isn't going to know what has hit him though, could well put him off starting that family.Grin

Just do it. your dd is 4 - it makes no difference to her 'education'. DO IT DO IT!!

PrincessScrumpy · 14/09/2012 16:10

Haha I know, db always says he's busy and tired! He hasn't a clue, bless him.

I know it's stupid but I'm scared dd will have a black mark against her name :(

If you explain everything to school I'm sure they'll understand also aren't you allowed more flexibility re taking kids out in rec?

Prarieflower · 14/09/2012 16:17

Also better to take her out in rec than say y2 so as you say could be your last chance.

DontmindifIdo · 14/09/2012 16:17

Go for it, reception is probably the best year to take your DD out.

cheesymashedpotatoes · 14/09/2012 17:12

ABSOLUTELY go for it.

If you child is under five their absence won't even make any difference to the school (absences under school going age don't even need to be reported to the LEA and don't go towards attendance levels).

IF she is over five five days can be authorised by the head anyway.

IT will make ZERO difference to you daughter's education.

You would be crazy not to.

DEFINITELY GO!!!!!

cheesymashedpotatoes · 14/09/2012 17:14

ps homework? at four?

if you feel really guilty (which you shouldn't) allieviate it by making a scrapbook of your trip with your daughter that she can show the class on her return.

PrincessScrumpy · 14/09/2012 18:01

cheesymashedpotatoes last week (her 1st week) she had 3 picture books and one with words, 26 words to learn, three letters to learn and draw 3 to 4 pictures of things beginning with each, plus a week review book to draw 4 more pictures in. Bit of a shock to us but dd seems to be managing!
