DS not eating pack lunch as he wants to have hot school lunches

AAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

He is 4, but seems to have stopped eating his lunch, well a lot of it, as he wants hot lunches, which is fine but DD doesn't eat school lunches which means we will be back to cooking 2 different meals a night.

We have tried sandwiches, wraps, cheese and ham muffins, onto pasta, ham and pea salad tomorrow.

If what he wants is to join in with the other kids having school lunches, then nothing you give him will be good enough. Sorry

BardOfBarking · 13/09/2012 22:14

`probably being a bit thick, but don't understand why this would mean 2 different meals at night?

fivegomadindorset · 13/09/2012 22:17

Because he won't eat a full meal in the evening as well. We have had 3 years of him having a hot lunch at nursery and not needing a full meal in the evening whereas DD won't eat hot school lunches and wants a full meal in the evening.

but cant you just give him less? The same meal in the evening but just less of it?

WildWorld2004 · 13/09/2012 22:18

Why do you need to cook two different meals, cant you just give him a bit less on his plate?

WildWorld2004 · 13/09/2012 22:19

If he won't eat the evening meal, then give him what you would have given him as his packed lunch?

x post.
Could he not just have a small portion? Or fewer components of the meal?

Aboutlastnight · 13/09/2012 22:20

Just give him a smaller portion of the hot meal in the evening then

fivegomadindorset · 13/09/2012 22:20

Now that is an idea, sorry tired and brain has gone to mush.

will try, can you get containers which aren't thermos flasks to do hot meals in?

I think it's a non issue, surely in the Winter months 2 small hot meals is the ideal. My dc school doesn't have a kitchen and I hate that they can't have a hot meal in the middle of the day. Have tried thermos but they are not great.

KitKatGirl1 · 14/09/2012 09:56

To be honest, I don't care if ds has three, two, one or no hot meals in a day (or cold), as long as the day is nutritionally balanced with a mix of carbs, protein, fats and fruit and veg.

Had a friend who insisted her kids had to have the opposite (hot/cold) for lunch/dinner so if I had them to tea I had to check whether they'd had hot school meals or pack ups (ds always had pack up because he is gluten and milk free which couldn't be catered for at primary sch). Not a problem to me, but just a bit weird.

I agree, would just give him a smaller portion of what you're all having with the occasional 'treat' of sandwiches etc if you want.
