What are children expected to be able to do by end of year R

I was just wondering:

  1. What is an average child expected to know in Maths by end of year R.
  2. What is an average child expected to be able to do in English/language by end of year R.
  3. Socially what is expected of a child at end of year R.

Just curious as the children seem to be on a great spectrum when they join year R. Some are able to read whereas some just about know their ABCs.

Hi,

This might help a bit
www.birthtofive.org.uk/pdf/Assessment%20Scales%20Overview.pdf

I think the average is to be at point 6 on the scale when you complete EYFS ie at end of year R. The scale points don't follow from each other though so for instance you could theoretically have demonstrated points 4,5 and7 or 123and 8 iyswim. To get point 9 you have to be exceptional and have achieved all points 1-8 first. I think thats right but am just an interested parent not a teacher or nursery leader.

There are other bits as well for instance there are some "key words" which are about 45 high frequency words that children are expected to be able to read by the end of year r.

All children learn at different rates however and the age differences have a big impact for instance I know that DS1 and DS2 can do similar things at similar ages but DS2 will be 6 months younger than DS1 was on school entry when he starts next September and will not be so far along on entry. I think over the first 2-3 years the age things starts to level out a bit.

Thank you for such a comprehensive response. I have not looked at your link but will do tonight.
