Astronauts who travelled to the moon needed to wear heavy boots to ensure they didn't float off into space.

This is a reading book (Ginn 360 L7), on transport, in a non-fiction section on space travel.

I have put something in the reading record, but how, how, how could a major educational publishing company let that get past them??? Do we not have science education any more? Arrggghhhh!!!!

I am dyslexic and my children are fab at spelling, its very handy as I can ask them how to spell things. :o They have never doubted my intelligence but accept that people are different and I often say coat hanger instead of umbrella etc. I tend to tut and mutter about semantics so they learn new words as well.

OP, I know this book and have ready it many, many times with children, and it also irks me that the information is incorrect!

I was Hmm and Confused when I first read it!

My Mum once suggested the school get a few new books when I came home with "King Tickle Me Do was as gay as he was queer"

Kittens GrinGrin

(and now I'm going to see if I can find that book because it's worth having just for that line)

Have found a good pic of the summer sun question

You can see how the same 'dose' of sunlight is spread over a wider area in the winter hemisphere, so the heating effect is shared out more... and you have to put your jumper on.

Nice one, Boulevard. I'm going to steal that one for use with my year 7s. Of course, they'll have forgotten it again by year 9!

Now I just have to work on convincing them that calcium really is a metal!

Houseworkprocrastinator · 14/09/2012 20:30

Shock calcium is a metal?

Houseworkprocrastinator · 14/09/2012 20:33

Can I recommend a "radicalsubstitution science fun fact of the day" thread.

I have learned more on this thread than from watching an episode of horizon.

alcofrolic · 14/09/2012 20:34

Calcium is an alkaline earth metal.

radicalsubstitution · 14/09/2012 20:56

Calcium is a very reactive metal. It reacts with water to produce hydrogen gas (highly flammable) and a lot of heat. Needless to say, teeth are not made of calcium!

Love the idea of a fun fact of the day thread - unfortunately I've just about run out of fun facts. It wouldn't last beyond Tuesday! Smile
