Hi I am relocating to England in November. My daughter was 6 in July so she will be going into year 2 when she gets there.

She has a general understanding of letters and is beginning to read little words. She knows her numbers and can do basic additional and subtraction.

She will still begin the other children but what else can I do with her to help her?

Also what should I be asking the school in regards to extra help. I think she will have caught up be the end of he school year. But will obviously need help in the beginning.

Am not a teacher, but ime (parent helper & mom of many), she sounds well within the usual range of ability for that point in English system. Just try to read with her & do simple maths? English libraries tend to have lots of early readers.

I assume you are coming from a country where she has not yet started school?
My DD has just started year 1 and most of the children are well into reading at this point. There are about 5 in the class who are still on the beginning stages though.

Having said that (just to prepare you really), I would think she will soon catch up. You could start trying to get her interested in reading as much as possible. I would think someone will have to go through the phonics system with her individually, so I would talk to the school about that.

Does she speak English? It really depends a lot on the area whether there are a lot of non-English speakers or not. In our area there are a couple in the class, but I know of others where they make up the majority. Those schools will be well equipped to help your daughter. Good luck.

When my son started Y2 last September, coming from Norway where they dont start school until the age of 6, the other children were already at a stage where they were taking notes of what the teacher was saying and writing on the board. At the end of the school year he had caught up with the other children in numeracy, and were at their level in science, but below national average for reading writing and spelling. It was hard work though. He got an individual plan from the schools Senco, pushing on with reading and writing, having to do reading homework daily, in addition to the other homework.

I think the best you can do is to ensure she knows the alphabet, not just to say it, but recognize the letters in whatever order they come, capital and small alike, and work on her handwriting.

Which area are you mov ing to? You may find it difficult to get a place in some areas, so be prepared for a wait.

We are in Greece and here she is starting year 1.
I have been doing phonics with her she knows the alphabet and recognises letters. She can read short words.

We are going to Gloucester. I have got my mum looking into schools to see what the situation is. There are about 10 primary schools within 2 miles from my muns house which is where I will be living.

Hopefullly with 10 schools, you'll have a chance!

I'm sure she'll catch up really quickly- children learn so fast, they're very good at soaking up information.
