Primary reading books and systems ginn v oxford

As dd is fixated with reading and levels just wanted to double check and clarify here.

shes says they have boxes all labelled with numbers and different levls in each box.

Last year at end of term she finished last book in level 3on oxford reading tree-The books were all about talik and very repeative,

I dont think shes had any biff and chip books yet?
some in her class did.

Yesterday shes come home with ginn 360 book called the reindier. Its a little book which dd says is harder and she thourght she was on level 5ut it says level 3.

Is it comparative with oxford reading tree.

As between all the boxes, numbers and changing brands of books im confused where shes at.

Had a glance at it and looks too easy for her. Then we did it, shes never read this book before and could read at all.

read the back-teacher part says

the reading 360 books are designed for extension reading alongside the reading 360readers. shes not read any other 30 books.
Apparently little books come in pairs with the 360 series.

dd just started year 2 and reckons nearly the whole class above her.
Is class teacher setting her at low point to start.

hope this works

Level 3 Ginn 360 is the same as level 5 ORT

mam29 · 08/09/2012 08:54

Thanks numbum.

its so confusing for a parents.

she found it easy.

why dont they just use one system be much simpler .

dd reckons shes was moved down a level last year but ta said no.

i cant see how ginn is harder than ort level 3 last term which she as bored sick of as could clearly read it unless she performs worse in school.

She has a reading complex as loads of kids younger ones higher than her. 2kids have been put up a class and younger.
shes on bottom table and says nearly everyone higher than her.

she got nc level end of year 1 1 b reading

wonder why they couldent enclose some thing like this with year 2 curriculum map they gave out.

The reason most schools don't use just one system is because different reading schemes have different strengths and weaknesses so a mix gives a better experience. It's all about the reading, rather than working your way through a particular scheme. Lots of schools follow the colour banding system so if a child was on turquoise books there may be Oxford or Ginn or who knows what available to them at that level. There is different numbering between the schemes because they are all written and produced by private enterprise rather than a centralised system.

mrz · 08/09/2012 13:23

and both Ginn and ORT were written many decades ago before there was a standardised system.

Twonker · 08/09/2012 14:12

I think ORT is more phonics based, but ginn expects children to start reading and learning more non phonetic words much sooner. which is very important for their fluent reading of more complex texts and 'real' book later on, not to mention their spelling.

I think it is good if your school is using more than one system.

My daughter also spent a while being fixated on levels and thinking she was behind. I spoke to her teacher about it who said, why no, she's doing fine. I repeated this line to her every time she talked about being behind, and she quite quickly stopped worrying about it. She is actually behind her little sister now, but doesn't know or care what level she is on. I think it can undermine self esteem when they are frequently comparing themselves negatively to others.

mrz · 08/09/2012 14:21

The original ORT is definitely look and say
Personally I wouldn't choose to use either scheme, there are much better options

Twonker · 08/09/2012 14:30

That's interesting MHz, what other options do you think are better? Can you link please? ThankThanks

Twonker · 08/09/2012 14:31

Sorry, not MHz, mrz Blush

Twonker glad shes not only one.

last year boy in class was mean to her saying she was on baby book and way above her level.

Plus due to setting this year shes sat next to none of her close freinds so shes been little down about that, thankfully theres brand new girl sat on her table so thats distracted her somewhat.

Never heard of ginn before now reception and year 1 was all ort.

Then I made mistake googling and said my reception childs on level 3ort and my dd on level 3ort:(.

I did free reading no levels on summer and had hoped that would help.

she seemed fed up of ort level 3when ended last term

I read the reindier book this morning she read it fine.
will read it again and ask questions to check shes comprehending the actual sory.

but relieved shes made some progress shes confused asking what level shes on so shes see level 3 and got upset as she thourght she level 5 and ended ort 3.

The boxes she keeps banging on about are just the boxes certain levels lept in.

not noticed any colour coding of

in a way colours sounds better and not as obvious to the child as numbers going upwarsds.

maybe ta can stick coloured stickers to cover up the levels might be best.

Theres a parent meet and greet monday but dont really want to discuss it there in front of other parents.

pushy mums been ragging she brough a few levels of ort and hers is level 6.

We have loads of different scheme and stand alone books and band them all by colour. This gives the children a wide range of different books to read at a suitable level for them. The Reindeer is a blue book, roughly equates to NC level 1C/1B (I think).

jaynebxl · 09/09/2012 07:31

Mam29 sadly even with colour bands children know exactly where they are in the scheme of things, what colour their friends are on and what order they come in!

wigglywoowoo · 09/09/2012 09:14

The whole reading level thing makes me quite sad. I keep trying to reinforce with my DD that it doesn't really matter what anyone else is doing but even at 5 she comes home and tells me so and so is on x etc!

I don't remember it being like this when I was at school but maybe it was!

mam29 · 09/09/2012 11:56

Im fed up of levels was sick of it last term and hoped wouldent continue into this term.

I guess kids are nosy what others are on and competative as the majority of her class including the ones are higher.

Decided last night to chill out about it least for first few weeks and see what happens.

so will read book again with her she got nearly all of it right bit of practice with pronouciation, will check her comprehension today and see how that it.

will write in parent book that she read with ease and enjoyed the book and see where we go from there not mentioning levels or say this is too easy move her up.

if she continually comes home with books to easy will have to step in and say something.

Will continue free reading with her for enjoyment.

So far 1 book in prefer ginn to ort will see how it goes next few weeks as ginn level 3 is ort level 5 she ended on ort 3 and comparable to 1b which she got in report and think might take a few weeks to filter through her progress.

Think we have 2parents evenings 1st one in november.
I dont wnat to be one of pushy parents cornering and moaning to teacher 1st week she seems much stronger teacher than year 1.

Teachers-are the kids openly competative in class? or just at home?

i dont get it we not pushy overcomeptative parents just want her to try her best, achieve her potential and enjoy school.

Just hoping no ones makes mean comment this year as shes sensitive.
