hes just started yr2 and although i listened to him read throughout the hoildays the teacher has moved him down.the books are way too easy and read lastnights within 10 minutes.
Has the teacher just done this until she can listen to him read assuming he has had no practice for 6 weeks?
He hasnt been given a record book yet so cant write a note in there and im not a parent that grabs the teacher every morning with problems

Has the teacher heard him read to move him down? If so, there may be specific areas she wants him to work on, such as comprehension or reading with expression. Does he know his reading target?

If she's not heard him read, I'd give it a few days to give her chance to assess each child individually. If this doesn't happen, I would say it's worth having an individual word.

The book may well be given to follow/re-enforce a specific lesson. Over the Summer my DS has been reading whatever and has always picked a much lower reading book. I suppose it helps his confidence (shrug). All reading is good.

My DS is finding going back to school to be challenging. If it were me, I'd give it a week or two and then write a note in his learning record. I'm not worried about reading levels at all. Reading the same Biff, Chip and Kipper books over would drive me slightly mad though.

Agree with redsky about giving her a few days, maybe a week for the teacher to assess his reading level properly. It could be that if she or a TA has heard him reading he was distracted so didn't quite get a picture of how well he can actually read.

I have the same problem. DS also now yr 2 has been given books at the level below where he finished in year 1. Now for us he was only put on the new level books a few weeks before the end of term so am guessing that teacher has assumed that no reading done in the holidays and is breaking him in gently. We do have a reading record so after the second easy book I have put a note in it explaining that we have read loads in the holidays and could he have the level above. Will wait and see what he comes home with today. Once you have a reading record you should do the same.

DS finds the same level of a different series harder. As he is used to Chip, Biff etc. he finds that easier than Project X/ non fiction at the same level.

Oxford Owl has ebooks that you can look at to try different ranges.

DS is now in yr3 and has always been put down at least 3 book levels at the beginning of the school yr, despite doing library reading challenge, talking about books, reading together etc...

I now take it with a pinch of salt tbh and am a bit cynical about it.

Egg - DD finds the project x books harder too than the ORT ones at the same level.

This did bother me with my first, and I was constantly at battle with the class teacher. I am sure i was mum from hell! When our eldest moved schools, he was moved up 2 levels in the first week, and within the month up another 2 levels.

Reading with our youngest, I now am not bothered. We read at home, and I know the books coming home from school are read and understood, as long as we enjoy reading I don't care what level is being put in the book bag.
