My son has just started the juniors and there is a note in the school window stating children need to practise their timetables.
Whilst looking online I found this themathsfactor.com/arithmetic-samples.aspx , has anyone else used this? Can't decide if the monthly subscription for the arithmetic course is a good idea, or the time table one off payment course or something else all together.

I did get from some people ohh you should just do workbooklets, games and count leaves on a tree but wanted something quick and targeted thats fun and boost her confidence.

Does anyone know if "Carol Maths" works on an ipad?

I think the Maths Factor programme by Carol Vorderman is excellent. My daughter is in Year 4 and is very good at maths, she really loves numbers. I have been looking for a programme that would stretch her and give her an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of maths and the many different ways of looking at numbers and patterns. We have attended a Kumon introductory session and although I was impressed with this ambitious programme I found the strict military style learning regime totally uncessary and unacceptable to me. And so I looked at private tuition and alternatives. I had heard of the Maths Factor and I decided to look into it and, having liked what I saw, I enrolled my daughter onto the programme for a discounted rate of £99 for a year. Given the cost of private tuition and programmes such as Kumon, this represents outstanding value for money. My daughter absolutely loves it and she is able to navigate through the different sessions and modules easily and tailor her learning to her abilities. If she finds it too easy, we simply whizz through it and move on to more challenging sessions. I am somewhat surprised to read some of the negative comments although I have noticed they are not that recent, so perhaps the website has been simplified and made more user friendly. Personally, I think that very young children, from Rec to Yr 2 will find navigating through the online programme difficult and there absolutely needs to be parental assistance. To expect a young child to work through the modules unassisted is unrealistic and will, in my opinion, not enable them to exploit the programme to its full potential. Some of the reviews criticise the level of repetition in the exercises but it is important to note that other expensive programmes focus specifically on being repetitive as repetition reinforces learning and a deeper understanding of the subject. The trick to learning maths successfully is to be able to spot and recognise patterns in numbers and apply logical thinking whether you are working through timetables, multiplications, fractions or complex maths later on i.e. algebra, trigonomety, calculus, statistics. In my opinion the programme supports logical thinking successfully and offers excellent support alongside school lessons. Worth getting Carol's book too "Help your Kids with Maths".
