Travel times to school

My two Ds in years one and two have been offered an amazing opportunity with great bursaries to a prep school. It's something we wouldn't even have considered normally but it's a musical school and oldest particularly is musical. Trouble is, it's around 25 miles away, and would take 50 mins in train or drive. Advantages are its next door to where I work 3 days a week. I'd go for it, but Dh thinks journey mad... We live in rural area but I know friends in London spend ages travelling short distances to school. What is worth it?

Not mad no. My sister drives 17 miles to get her DDs to their amazing school. She passes three on the way! She also lives rural...you won't be the only ones either.

Take it...grab it with BOTH hands.

My yr 5, 6 and 8 DC go to a school 12 miles away. It takes 45 minutes by school bus or 15 minutes if I drive them.
It is a long day for them but it is doable (if doable is a word!)

Things to think about:

  • how long does the journey take during the school run? Is it really "just" 50 minutes?
  • what is parking like near school? How far away will you be parking?
  • on the days you're not working you will be spending 4 hours travelling to and from school
  • if the DC have after school clubs what time will they be home?
  • if just one of them has an after school club, how will you manage this?
  • what if one of them is ill, or forgets their lunch/musical instrument/PE kit?

Not mad at all. I'd grab that opportunity with both hands!
