Healthy snack for reception child

DS started school today and I need to send him with a healthy snack each day. It's a bit a challenge, however, as most 'healthy' snacks are not things he'll eat. Foods he doesn't like include cereal or oaty bars and most fruit. His preferred snack is cheese on crackers, but he'll eat apple or banana if he's hungry. What do you give your child? Please give me some inspiration!

I get the yoghurt strawberry flakes sometimes. Have a look in the dried fruit aisle.

DD tends to have grapes or banana sometimes plain biscuits

I usually give DS an apple, banana, satsuma, carrots raisins or grapes. Sometimes I give him some bread sticks.

Last year our school stipulated that mid-morning snacks should be fruit or vegetables. This year they have changed this to a 'healthy snack'.

I helped out last year and realised quite a few children had snacks that were not what I would class as healthy. Of course it was not my place to say anything (just a parent helper), but I could see DS eyeing me sadly when I was opening bags of cookies or chocolate buttons for the children in his class.

His class were handed a piece of fruit mid afternoon to eat during circle time. Almost every child took and ate the fruit, regardless if what it was (there was no choice). Some parents were amazed that their DC were happily eating all manner of fruits!

DD is a bg fan of fruit "yo-yos". 100% fruit, on special offer at Sainsburys.

Beanbagz · 06/09/2012 22:29

Tomorrow mine are having blueberries (DD) and strawberries (DS).

Other foods they take are...

Pepper strips
Cucumber
Grapes
Cherry tomatos
Banana (with their name on the side & sometimes a picture written on)
Raisins

Thanks. I'll buy some grapes - he likes those! Today he's insisted on taking a ham sandwich, which is more of a lunch item IMO, but we'll see. Cheese cubes and bread sticks is a good idea too.

Desn't he get free fruit snack at school? Round here all infants get a piece of fruit for snack provided by the council.

My dd1 is fruit- and veg-phobic Hmm but will eat fruit flakes (which count as 1 of their 5 a day), apple crisps (ditto, made by Kiddylicious, I think). Often the baby food aisle in the supermarket has healthy (sneakily hidden fruit or veg) snacks.

Lonecatwithkitten · 07/09/2012 20:46

We have to have non-processed fruit or vegetables. Blueberries, apple, banana, strawberries, carrot sticks, pepper sticks, cucumber sticks, cooked peas, sweet corn from tin, runner beans and finally satsumas.

Inneedofbrandy · 08/09/2012 09:02

Mine have to have healthy snacks no chocolate or crisps. I don't send in fresh fruit or veg because they get served it twice a day in class and usually come out chomping a carrot or apple.

I think it would be worth checking with school how much they get served, plus how much you put in his lunchbox/school dinner before sending him with more fruit. Mine must get 6/7 of portions a fruit before there even home. Getting worried about tooth enamel now.

conorsrockers · 08/09/2012 09:12

I try avoid processed things (in packets or bags). Raisins, grapes, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, apricots (coz they are small!), cut up peppers, occasionally mine have a hot cross bun....sometimes I do carrot, cucumber, tiny tomatoes and sweetcorn (if I can be bothered).....

jelliebelly · 08/09/2012 09:38

Cheese cubes and grapes in a snack bag
Banana
Ham roll
Fruit yoyo
Cheese and crackers
Hot cross bun
Blueberry muffin
Carrot sticks
