Physical restraint on a year 1 child.

Could anyone tell me if they have any experience on what behaviour warrants physical restraint on a 5 year old child?

Endangering another child.
Endangering an adult.

Usually it's to stop them hurting themselves though.

Is there a blanket restraint policy for all schools or are they school specific, generally?

There tend to be standard ones e.g. from the LA, which schools then modify to suit.
You can ask a school for a copy of their policy.

The school should have policy, which will be adapted from the standard LEA one.

This gives more info too.

As has been said, most schools will have their own policy or adopt their LA policy. Typically this covers when restraint can be used (usually risk of injury to self/others and/or risk of serious damage to school property) and who can do it (usually staff who have had training in correct restraint techniques)

being a danger to themself or to others

Force can be used to control pupils to maintain order.

Teachers use the most minimal force they have to. For example holding a child's hand when you cross a road is technically using force.

All schools should have a restraint book that parents can find out the circumstanes that led to the child being restrained.

Having worked with kids with severe challenging behaviour - I never restrained unless the child was in danger of hurting themselves or another person. Property did not matter, I evacuated the classroom of other people rather than restrain.

I think there are different policies, but my training was very clear that untrained people should not restrain, because it is downright dangerous.
