Reception and Year 1 - Reading with teacher how often?

Hi All,

Just wondering how often your child reads 1 to 1 with their teacher in reception or year 1? Also how often they bring home new readers (not library books)

Thx

Just started Year 1, so not sure how often the teacher will listen, but in Reception his books were changed twice a week. Depending on where he was on a level, we sometimes had two at a time (ie four a week).

smilesandsun · 03/09/2012 21:47

thanks. Does that mean he read twice a week with the teacher too?

In DDs school books are changed every day and they are listened too by a parent helper every week and by the teacher every few weeks

sittinginthesun · 03/09/2012 21:53

No, probably once a fortnight with either the teacher or TA.

But... the teacher knew I was listening to him nightly, I mentioned in his reading record when I felt he was ready to move up, or adjust the number of books if they were more tricky. Every single question/comment in his reading record was acted on that day, so even if he was listened to every week, he was being completely supported (not even mentioning phonics lessons etc).

thanks, I'd love to hear from some more of you too

dd was listened to twice a week in reception, then at least once a week in year one, although often twice. in year one she was normally listened to by a TA, but the TAs seemed to know what they were doing, so that was fine with me!

smilesandsun · 04/09/2012 07:23

Thanks janek. Every schools seems to be slightly different my reception child was just once a week and she is a baby in the year (August) and finding it tough going so I'm just trying to see what is the 'norm'...

About 4 times a term (1 on 1, comments in reading diary). But they also do lots of guided reading in phonics that is not recorded in the book we see.

Fwiw dc is a good reader. I think those who are a bit younger/on shorter books read more.

Weekly with the teacher in Reception; weekly with either the teacher or TA in Year 1. Reading book changed every night, library book changed weekly.

SizzleSazz · 04/09/2012 09:25

Reception, twice a week to parent helpers, teacher/Ta a couple of times a term.
Books changed every night (if reading record signed)

Just remember that for a teacher to listen to every child in a class of 25 read it would take 8.5 hours. That's nearly 2 school days!

That's why children read to parent volunteers and TAs. And why they do guided reading in groups with the teacher.

And why reading to a parent every day (or nearly every day) is a crucialpart of the learning process!!!

Reading with the teacher was rare tbh but when DS was in yr1 (he is now going into yr3) it was every week with the TA.

The same was supposed to happen in yr2 but didn't Hmm

DD is due to start reception soon and I would have thought she will be listened to at least once a week.

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/09/2012 13:22

Books changed twice a day as long as heard by parent and was fears by TA or teacher everyday. The same from reception to the end of year 2. Only between 14 and 18 in the class.

tryingtonotfeckup · 04/09/2012 13:45

In reception DS had books changed 3x a week, one book at a time at first but it went up to 2/3 books in the summer term and during holidays. He would read with someone, be it teacher, TA or parent helper when the books were changed, so 3x a week. One of the readers in Reception was a retired primary school teacher. Read with teacher regularly.

PiedWagtail · 04/09/2012 14:23

change book 3x per week in Reception, listened to once every 2 weeks by teacher, usually, and sometimes by parent helper too.

Goldenbear · 04/09/2012 15:00

DS was in reception last year and the book was changed every day. The teacher listened to him read once a week. I'm not sure how frequently he read to parent helpers and TAs.

adeucalione · 04/09/2012 15:58

DC rarely read to a teacher on a 1-1 basis, but read weekly as part of a 20min guided reading session (part of a group of 6 children).

Reading to a parent helper was on an ad hoc basis, and maybe worked out at about once every 2-3 weeks.

Books were changed whenever I wrote 'finished' in the reading diary.

You can't rely on school to teach your DC to read, the vast vast majority of the learning takes place at home ime.

Fuzzymum1 · 04/09/2012 20:04

I volunteer to read with KS1 in DS3s school. All children are read with at least one a week, those requiring more help are read with more often if there is time.

thanks everyone :)
